    Hey,

So I’ve scoured the internet and cannot find this information anywhere I’ve looked.

I have a 2000 Tundra V8. It came with a tow package with a 4-pin connector, but the connector has not worked since the day I got the truck (about 4 years ago). I recently decided to fix it and upgrade to a 7-pin with a brake controller while I was at it.

Everything seemed to go well, but when I tried to move my trailer, the brake lights would not come on. All the other lights worked, just not for braking.

I’m wondering if I should have installed a converter to combine my turn signal and brake lights? I thought the brake controller would handle brake lights, but I am not sure and cannot find any good instructions for installing a 7-pin with brake controller from scratch online.

Does the brake controller control brake lights, or is that controlled separately and requires a converter?

    You'll need a converter.

This is correct. I just did the exact same procedure to my truck. You simply need one of the many little gizmos for doing this. Brake controllers have nothing to do with brake lights, (other than having to tap into your brake switch under the dash)

I'll try to find it later if its not posted again, but someone was very helpful for me when I had a similar question and posted a full diagram and video for how to wire up a 7 pin connector and brake controller on my truck.

Thanks! I added in the converter and it works perfect now!
