How come the 2nd gen looks bigger than 1st gen, but it doesn't

I think that I'm not the only one who thinks the 2nd gen Tundra looks longer, wider, and bigger than the 1st Tundra. Even my friend who is a manager at a Toyota dealer thinks his 2012 double cab is bigger than my 1st gen double cab. However, after looking at the dimensions online, both of them are pretty much the same. What do you think?

It's all about the body lines. It's like putting on a shirt with vertical or horizontal stripes. It plays with the eyes and can make you look thinner and taller or fatter. The brain is a funny thing.

2004 to 2006 4 door Gen 1 crew cabs are considered Gen 1.5 by many because they do not share the same basic dimensions as the previous trucks / models, they are much larger & heavier than all other Gen 1 models and very close to similar, but even larger Gen 2 trucks.

That is weird. I had a little seat time in a 09 DC and it definitely feels bigger and drives bigger if you know what I mean. My buddy has a 16 F150 and it's definitely roomier inside, cavernous in comparison, but parked side by side they are nearly identical in size

 

They look like the overweight & constipated edition.

But, I might be 1st gen biased..

 

Look at the curb weight, why was the 4.7 even an option in the gen 2 my god

 

4.5" difference in shoulder room is significant. As in interior ergos go, looks like the second gen def was designed for americas 95th percentile.

Exterior dims wise, i always notice the differences in the real world. But that doesnt bother me.. my dingle isnt looking for compensation

Coming from a ‘13 Crew Cab to my current ‘06 DC, the rear legroom is pretty significant, I think I read 7” or so extra, plus the extra shoulder room makes it feel much bigger IMO.

That said, it definitely drove “bigger”, if that makes sense? I honestly love my ‘06 more because it’s “easier” to drive and park in crowded lots and just overall more simple.

I do wish the rear had a little more legroom, but it’s not terrible by any means. I’ve ridden in several new gen Tacoma’s and those feel cramped inside, I guess bc of the panels and interior features? The 4Runner and GX460 share pretty much everything, yet my wife’s GX feels much bigger inside than the 4Runner bc of the way their dashes protrude.

Buddy had an ‘09 Tundra front seat headroom was lacking compared to 1st gen. Had to ‘sinch’ the caboggin down when entering/exiting. The angle of the dangle wasn’t ergonomic on the 2nd Gen.

Only thing I liked was the 5.7L engine.

 

I like my buddy's 08 crewmax, but that bed is ridiculous. I've wanted an 06 ram megacab for a while, but only to put some subs behind the seat and that sweet, sweet 5.9/6 spd. I even grabbed a pic towing Ironman back home.

 

I have hip problems and have always sat with the seat all the way back; using my legroom to readjust to lessen the pain. My 'bigger' 2004 tundra Double Cab has less legroom than my 2010 Tacoma extended cab.

Has anyone ever had mods done to to a double cab to extend the seat back?

 

A lot of taller people have installed SeatJackers in their trucks to elevate just the front two mount points and said that's helped them out.

Also, were the rails different on the 00-04 and 05+? I think I recall something like that being mentioned. But I could be mistaken.

 

It appears that the Double Cab goes back less than my Tacoma extended cab because of respect for the "rear passenger". "F" that guy, my leg hurts!

 

This was a dumb thread to start. Pretty much every single dimension posted shows that is is several inches longer in every metric. It’s definitely a much larger truck.

 

agreed. which is why I went with the 1st gen. I dont like how big and bubbly the 2nd gens are.
