Dealership won't replace instrument cluster on Canadian truck imported to US

Hi All - bought a 2019 Tundra last year which was imported to the US from Canada. When purchased it had what I assume is a U.S. gauge cluster as it is in MPH.

Fast forward to a couple months ago and the fuel gauge in the cluster broke, the needle has wrapped past "full" and fluctuates with the fuel level but is no longer aligned with the indicator levels. Took it to my local Toyota dealership and they said they would need to order a whole new cluster, with the exact mileage currently on the truck, so I left it there.

The Toyota dealership has now said that after some back and forth with Toyota they have denied the order of the new U.S./MPH cluster, as they do not see that it should have had a U.S. cluster to begin with.

Dealership I bought the truck from is not a Toyota dealership, and I doubt they would be of much help.

Anyone else experience issues in replacing the instrument cluster in an imported truck or have any advice on how to resolve?

    Thanks in advance

    Josh

Are you trying to get the replacement covered under warranty? Only way I could see that being an issue.

Thanks for the reply. It being covered under warranty or not was never discussed. I would hope if the issue was just that Toyota would not replace it under warranty, as it had already been replaced when imported, and it was just a matter of needing to pay out of pocket that would have been mentioned.

From my conversation it seemed that Toyota/the dealership was not able to replace the cluster as the part number for the cluster in there now did not match the original equipment of the truck, so they took the view as it had been tampered with.

I'm going to try calling a different dealership and see what they say.

If a Toyota dealership sold it to you and you didn't change the cluster yourself then I would ask if the mileage was correct when they sold it to you or did they (inadvertently or not) sell you a truck with the incorrect mileage on the title. It seems it would be up to the dealership that you bought it from to figure out if they sold you a truck that had the incorrect mileage. You might start with calling the dealership that you bought it from and then call the state dealership board. If the mileage was incorrect or the cluster was tampered with then it could be a fraud issue and up to the Toyota dealership that sold it to you to make it good or assist in identifying who changed the cluster. When someone screws with the mileage and doesn't disclose that the mileage isn't correct then it's called fraud. You can call Toyota corporate and ask them about the history of the truck.

    Hi Josh,

i an currently dealing with the same issue right now. I was told that a Canadian truck is incompatible with a US cluster as they are design differently.

the Toyota dealership I brought my truck to said I could use a new Canadian cluster w/ kilometers or they would put the old one back in, but with the old one it would continue to throw codes. Hope this helps.

I called Toyota themselves to see if they could answer that & they referred me to Toyota Canada who I am on the phone with. The hard part is, none of the car reports pulled show this swap either.

Being that many cluster swaps are for nefarious reasons that is not surprising at all.
That fact that it is not showing up pretty much solidifies your truck has far more miles on it than you think it does.

Hey guys, the exact thing happened to me. Long story short, bought a 2020 tundra (1 previous owner, leased) from a non-Toyota dealership.

bought it 6+ hours away from me (it was a good deal) when filling out paperwork, a technician came up to me and said that there was a problem with the “fuel float sensor” and that he replaced it.

He said however in order to “troubleshoot” to see if it got fixed, I would need to drive it long distance, perfect. My drive was 6 hours long. He said if the problem persists, take to local Toyota dealership and they will foot the repair bill.

the fuel gauge was always showing full. On the long drive back, it would dip down to empty. After that, Christmas tree lights all over the dash (all safety features/trailer brake controller disabled)

Toyota dealership said they have a Canadian cluster on order, but it’s been on back order and they don’t know when it will come in. And every time I drive the damn thing, I gotta disconnect the battery to get the lights to go away.

    anyone get theirs fixed yet?
