Oil Filter housing, metal strainer supposed to be there?

Just changed the oil in my 2017 Tundra, 5.7L
I noticed recently a Tundra repair video and the guy replaced the oil filter. His housing has the metal strainer in the center of his Oil Filter Housing Cap as seen in the image below.

Mine doesn't have that metal strainer. I think it's purpose is to "allow" the bypass valve to open if the filter clogs. Without it my paper filter would have to be rigid enough to depress the bypass valve. I'm not sure it would be able to do that.

Do any of you Tundra people know if the metal strainer is supposed to be there, or not? I think it's been this way since I bought the truck in 2019.

Here's the succinct answer: YES.

 

Yes it is supposed to be there. If you have the plastic housing, then it is missing. If you have a metal housing, then that means that someone swapped from the plastic to metal housing and didn't move the strainer over.

I'll order this one on Amazon. It comes with 3 different length stems. Toyota parts lookup calls for a part number but when I look it up people who purchased it for Tundra say the center stem is too short and they had to cannibalize the old cap. Since I don't have an old cap with a stem I'll get this kit. And, mine is the plastic housing. Anyway, this should fix my problem.

Does it have the spring and valve plate in the bottom? If those are missing, you need those along with the long metal strainer.

Its purpose is to prevent the paper/cellulose filter element from collapsing under pressure. Metal spin-on oil filters have them as well.

 

The parts I need are on order. The question I have is, without the screen stack and spring, what has been taking place in my oil filter system.

At 4:53 in this video, Ahmad explains that when the metal screen moves down it exposes the bypass ports (at the top of the filter) and causes oil to bypass the filter.
If I understand this correctly, without the metal screen & spring in place (as has been my situation) my filter is always in bypass mode!
Basically, I have not been filtering oil.

Yes without that tube you're not filtering the oil and the paper filter is likely to collapse down.

 

I brought my Tundra 5.7 to the local Toyota dealership and they removed the oil suction tube when they changed my oil. About 2000 miles later I got a P0012 code bank #1 and #2. I had to get home and put about 500 miles on it with the check engine light on. Found out the filter had collapsed because they removed the tube. Should I be concerned about damage to my engine?
