I wont deny alot of the hate that gets thrown around against the ecoboost and millions of opinions had me worried. I did research and given this Engine and Trans has been on the market for many years they have really ironed out alot of details. Then hearing about all the GM lawsuits had me jump ship from the AT4. I felt the exact same about my tundra on the unrefined feeling.

I just traded in my 2022 2.7L V-6 Eco boost Ford Edge ST on a 2018 Tundra. This was my 2nd Ecoboost Ford. The 1st a 2017 Expedition 3.5L

By coincidence my company provided truck is a 2020 Chevy Silverado with the 4 cylinder 2.7L turbo. Just passed 40,000 miles on it. This is a surprising little motor replacing their 6 cylinder. My last was a GMC 4.3L NA V-6. The 2.7L gets the same MPG yet feels like a V-8 in power. If this is reliable it is a good choice for those not using their trucks to tow or carry heavy loads often.

I had zero issues with them although 2022 was only traded in with low mileage because the ST package had too many gadgets like self parking, lane centering, etc that I don't think will last 10 years. I went backwards for less complicated and known long term reliability. I expect the 2018 Tundra to last to 2033 with proper maintenance.

On the Expedition 80,000 trouble free miles at the time of selling.

I did hedge my bet on both Fords with a Ford Factory extended warranty. With Ford there a few dealers that will sell them online for a much better price. Good luck.

No doubt the reliability is there with Toyota but with that being said they are definitely not PROBLEM FREE. I noticed with all my Toyota they always developed small nagging type issues which I as a person cannot stand. Again my personal experience but Both my Tundras became rattle boxes by 40K Miles. Wheels and tires NEVER balanced right whether it was aftermarket or stock set ups. It was a running joke at my work how often my truck was getting aligned and balanced. I ran the numbers and my 17 during my 5 years of owning it was in the shop for shakes and vibrations over 2 dozen times. Did it ever have a catastrophic failure, no but for me at the end of the day I was putting forth alot of energy to keep the truck riding right or getting it close to what I could handle driving it everyday.

Did you put a lift and big offset tires on your Tundras like I see you listed on the Ford?

Don't be offended but I am old school and think lifts are silly when they do nothing but make performance worse plus add in complications for handling, braking, vibrations, etc. Lifted trucks are off the list of any used ones I would buy for that reason. Perhaps the lift, spacer and tires were the problem? Maybe a newer Ford is designed to take this cosmetic changes on vehicles better?

I only say that because the 2018 I bought with no lift or spacers, should be right in the sweet spot for the same issues you were experiencing and the 300 miles I did on it this weekend had zero alignment, vibration or rattling noises. I could be wrong and come back in a few months agreeing with you.

Lastly in all my research for the Ford Ecoboost motor longevity, yes the do last a long time, change the oil more frequently like 5,000 miles or less due to it being used to help cool the Turbos. Radiator fluid does as well but didn't see anyone reporting they changed that earlier. Also change that air filter often as well. Don't want any particles getting into fan blades.

Every poster on the F-150 forums with high mileage ecoboost trucks did that. Those that wait to do it in 10k mile increments have the most failures.

Your 100% right I did have all those things on my Tundra. Those lift specs were for my Tundra and with the Ford I havent touched it. I agree with you and sometimes feel guilty in that regard that maybe I caused the issues. Granted I worked with alot of brands throughout owning the Tundra who stated lift or no lift the behavior I was experiencing was not normal and they felt something was wrong. Every shop I went to said this is how ALL Toyotas drive in our opinion. It was very defeating so that is primarily why i bought the Tremor given it has more off road special features off the lot making me less tempted to modify. One thing though is the Tundra never drove like the Ford even when it was all stock. I do think the Ford and GMC (when I test drove) handled alot smoother then the Tundra and the steering is much more firm or sporty. My wife has driven my Ford and said it drives more like her Mercedes and the Tundra never ever felt like that. Again this is all preference and being a Toyota owner for 20 years I will never bad mouth the brand. We will see how the Ford does on reliability with time but as for my annoying perfectionist expectations on things the truck has me EXTREMELY happy at the moment.

I did this with my Tundra and plan to do the same with the Ford given it definitely has more things to worry about with those twin turbos.

I traded my 09 Crewmax for a 2021 F150. Like a good Toyota loyalist I held my decade plus year old truck that I was interested in upgrading by 2020 and patiently waited through 2 years of redesign suspense fully intending to do a facebook shot of new Toyota next to old toyota. All that waiting only to realize when the curtain was pulled aside that nothing excited Me about the new Tundra.

I am the customer profile Toyota targeted.
And I couldn’t do it, because the perceived message to me was “OK we changed it, come get another one” and this wasn’t good enough. Suspicions about the priorities confirmed when I watched all the serious engineering energy go into the class leading Tacoma redesign a couple years later.

I was thinking the same thing. I hear lots of complaints about domestics being rattle traps by the time they hit 40k miles. Not so much with Toyotas.

Gotta say, between the big 3, ram, chevy and ford, most of the highlights are the tech, interior and the ride. Unfortunately nothing but issues with the heart of the trucks, the engines themselves. Very nice to the eye but horrible to the wallet. Good luck with your ford, your probably gonna need it.

I figured the hate would come and everyone is entitled to their preference. As I mentioned before the amount of money I dropped on my Tundra in repairs and the time it spent in shops chasing issues it will take ALOT for this Ford to catch up. All trucks have their problems I understand that.

I've always hated Fords. But I honestly wish you best of luck with the new truck and hope you enjoy plenty of years of little to no issues. You gotta do what's best for you, not what is best for anyone else. Stick around the Tundra forums!

There’s at least one in every crowd lol. Enjoy your truck and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks!
My neighbor has over 360,000 miles on his Ford half ton and he treats it like a truck!
All brands make lemons and all brands have their bulletproof trucks, it’s all a roll of the dice these days :)

Congratulatins. With the insane markups Toyota dealers are demanding, I am in half a mind to give up my tundra trd pro search and get the tremor instead. There are some killer deals out there on the 2023 models. Frankly, a 62K non hybrid tremor is a better value than a 62k non hybrid limited trd off road. Just so many years of owning toyota stable (even very old ones) which have been super reliable makes us pause and run back to Toyota.

Op- great looking truck and congrats on the new purchase. I wouldn't worry to much about opinions here, it's like a$$hole$ everyone has one. I've owned lotys of different brand trucks through the years. I've better luck with Fords over Chevy. Dodge was terrible with electrical issues. My last Ford was a 2007 Ford Expedition with 260k. The only reason I switched is because the dealer servicing the suv, damaged the block when servicing the spark plugs. Long story short, the dealer made things right by offering a great deal on the tundra. Next truck won't be the Tundra, don't like where Toyota is headed with this one.

I tried hard to fall in love with the 23 tundra and there were so many things pointing away from it that I had to look at other brands or at least consider them. Once I did I was immediately sold that Toyota would not be my next truck.

I just rented a 21 expedition max over the weekend with 50600 miles ( at 90 mph) the transmission went on it. Make sure you get the extended warranty.

Thank you lol I got a absolute "cant walk away" deal on this Tremor. Looking at the 23 Tundra with equal features I was at about a 84K price tag.

The only ford I would consider is the 5.0 v8 or 7.3 diesel. Op you just traded your reliable truck for a 2 or 3 year truck before it becomes an unreliable piece of junk

The comments in here are some of the best of read in a while.

To the O.P., congrats on your new truck, I hope it serves you well and you enjoy it. Your comparisons are well written and helpful.

I love my 5.7, but the 3.5 in my 2017 raptor was stupid fast, and was an absolute hoot to drive. The 10 speed was a little clunky, a reflash helped immensely, and the newer ones I've driven are much better. I'll second your thoughts that trans worked wonders to keep that motor on power all the time. I would love an 8/10 speed in my tundra.

We have more than a few ecoboosts in our fleet, and they're proving to be reliable. As a die hard toyota fan, it's hard to ignore some of what the big three is putting out these days. In the past few months i've driven new trucks from all of them (yay for new fleet rigs!) and they have all impressed me.

Anywho, kudos to you for trying something different.

Thanks for your reviews! Very good to know. Now my 23’ Tundra limited is losing power from dead stops at intersections… I love Toyota too but I may reconsider brands after this lease it up. Your truck is dope!

Again, I understand the reliability of Toyota Trucks are superior to most brands thus why I have owned one for 20 years. That does not mean the truck drives and presents itself the way an owner would like. I dont know who here would cheer about a truck they did not like how it drove and handled. Also! constantly chasing nagging issues frequently for years to just say "ILL BET SHE GOES 250K MILES THOUGH!" If thats what some people do then I guess I am completely odd in what I expect from my vehicles. I bought my wife a Mercedes and had a line of people saying DONT DO IT! They are expensive and dont last. Her car has been amazing since the day we bought it. The biggest reason I say that is not because it hasnt had a single issue its because we love the car and how it drives and performs. I would never buy a car simply to expect 100's of thousands of unenjoyable miles lol to me thats silly
