So I washed my wife's car and found 2 rust looking spots. I think I have touch up paint but I know i need to do something to clean up the rust/brown spots before applying. Can I get some suggestions?
I got some sanding sticks off Amazon. I was thinking WD40 and sanding?

2 spots, both on roof. I have Toyota Touch up paint, mainly want to stop the rust.

    Thanks

This is what I would do because I already have everything to do the job. Take painters tape and surround the rust area giving you maybe 1/4" exposed area past to rust. Pick at the rust very gently with an old pocket knife, small ice pick or tiny screw driver. You want to remove as much loose rust at you can.

Then using a Q tip dab rust converter on the rusty area. Follow directions on the container.

Using a good self etching primer spray some in the lid and using Q tip dab it on the treated area. Repeat. Very lightly scuff the dried primer and top coat with Toyota paint.

    Must be dry and clean.

Edit: I like those linked sanding sticks. Good thinking.

Don’t use WD40 - if it has silicon the paint will not adhere

I didn’t think of the rust converter. Good idea thanks. Do i need primer with touch up paint ? Spots are probably 1/4” or less

Yes on the primer. I prefer NAPA brand Martin Senour self etching primer.

Here's something that seals off rust. It's used to treat the bare steel walls inside water towers. We used this on the Railroad to cover battery terminals, seal wire splices and on threads of fasteners. It's great stuff to have around.
If you wanted to stop rust instead of painting it this grease can be rubbed in to the area or melted in with a hair drier. Also used on light bulb sockets

Finally able to start on this project. The rust reformer says let dry 4 hours for oil based paint, 1 hour for latex based paint and 3 days for aerosol paint. Since my next step is the Martin Senour self etching primer and it’s aerosol ( I’ll spray in a cup and dab it on) do I need to wait 3 days ?
