    See? That dude can hussle.
If that was the Ford plant, it would've taken 6 workers 3 hrs to get that mailbox removed and in the truck. Not including their 5 breaks and lunch. Not to mention 2 of them would've been "injured" and out on comp for 2 yrs.

Whatever this forum told me to do
How about welfare/food stamps getting a 25% raise last year

    to help stimulate the economy

I don’t know too many free market folks that got a raise last year.

    just sayin.

Depending on how this goes one of two things are going to happen:

    1. If they get close to their demands, EVERY a union will strike in short order.

    2. They will have to accept the 20% increase and go back to work…..or risk losing their jobs. I have to imagine that there will be a lot of people flocking to those factories to accept some of those jobs for that pay.

And let me be clear, I am NOT suggesting that these jobs are easy in the least. But a 20% pay raise and a livable wage with stability would be enough for many people to flock there.

That only applies if it was a salary position.

Either way, the employer agreed to it

I'm not sure on the residency requirements. Doubt it since I know of LE living in different cities and commuting in their cruiser.

I joined a union for the first time this year……new job essentially required it. Here is what I will say: these negotiations don’t come without sacrifice. What I have learned in my short time at the new job is that the union definitely advocates and serves a purpose, BUT there are compromises from the previous non-union job. Namely flexibility in leave, comp time, etc. They are sticklers for that now and there is a finite amount of time you can take. Any time I am not at work during working hours I am required to take leave.
The other thing - the UAW are asking for increased medical benefits…..which they will probably get and deserve. But that cost will be passed onto the workers by increasing union fees, etc. None of this will be “free”

Unions have changed from their original purpose of protecting workers decades ago and have themselves become huge corporations (the Teamsters being one of the worst). they have their own corporate offices with many upper CEOs earning high 6- figure, or higher, salaries paid by dues. They have shifted from protection and fairness of workers to protecting their own lavish lives.
They entice the less knowledgeable with promises of a large raise, which they often achieve, but as with everything in life, there is always a tradeoff. Once they get their dirty claws in, they abandon the workers and often tell them to pound sand when a real problem occurs.
Even in a right to work state, I have run into these union bastards a couple of times and each time it turned out as expected.

Fuck unions. I hope the big 3 fire every last worker that goes on strike and replaces them with somebody who actually wants to work a decent day for decent pay.

    No doubt right?

We average 4.43% raise over the last 12 years. I'm sure in the hell grateful we have received any of them. I know individuals that haven't seen a raise in 8 years. Some years our budget is tight to meet our customers needs. Some years we kill it and get rewarded well.

This is the percent of raises in the past 12 years.

Welcome to my world as a gubment employee. If we get a raise in 5 years, it's a shock. And we are usually well below the public level already.

That was a different situation. We did a market analysis and why people were leaving. We couldn't keep people for 35.00 per hour (2013) because other power companies were offering 10.00 per hour more, better benefits, profit sharing and bonuses. We had to up the game a lot.

Absolutely. We just did a hiring for apprentices. Might take a pay cut a first. We start a greenback at 30.00 per hour and by the fourth year you will be at 43.00 per hour with about 210-240 hours of overtime per year built into your schedule. You work ~15 days per month on average.

Then you can start working towards a control room operator and that pay range is 44-55.00 per hour with the same overtime requirements.

Shift diff is 1.70 per hour for nights. Kinda low, but it's better than nothing.

No, we do all on the job training. If you were a Navy Nuke or Turbine mech/power generator in the military it helps.

Feel free to apply. We are always looking for skilled technicians. The electric division is pretty good. The substation tech/line troubleshooter are very good jobs. I used to work with the troubleshooters.

Oh, and that electric meter specialist is an amazing career. Had my wife not been an electric meter journeyman and then the supervisor of the division...that is what my ass would have done.

Not too damn bad at all. Funny thing that @EmergencyMaximum mentioned about education, I could have gone to college on a academic scholarship, many honor roles, advanced education classes, etc, etc, but I hated school, even though it was easy for me. Ended up in "public service". Now retired USPS and current low level State gubment worker, although my passion was always turning wrenches, fabrication, and welding. Problem was, I couldn't find good, stable employment doing what I liked, so I went with what I did.
I'm in my 50s now, so no changing for me, but your numbers look appealing.

I have told so many people to get into power generation. With new tech coming out every day...the possibilities are endless.

The problem we are facing is the housing crisis in CO.

I note with interest the demand to return to a "traditional pension" and have to put on my professorial hat. Most folks do not recognize what "traditional pension" means. Prior to 1974, pensions stood on their own, backed solely by the pension assets of the company that created them and in some cases the Unions that invested those monies. When companies failed and there were insufficient assets in the pension plan then the pensioners lost.
In 1974, the Unions successfully lobbied Congress to pass ERISA. That legislation is known for many different things (many aspects of which are good) but as to pensions it created the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) in order to provide "insurance" for pension plans; that is a guaranty of about 75-80% of the pension liabilities of private employers and union pension plans. If the pension plan invests well, then the company is permitted to terminate the plan (typically through purchasing annuities) and for the employer to keep the surplus. Oddly, it also permitted companies to underfund their pension liabilities by only requiring minimum funding payments. As examples, the GE pension plan is underfunded by about $27 billion and the GM pension is underfunded by about $20 billion. Upon failure of a company, if the pension plan is underfunded, then the PBGC picks up most of the pension liabilities. And PBGC means taxpayers. Thus, all taxpayers must satisfy the unreasonable pensions or the incompetence of Union investments of those pension monies. The compromises of the politicians in order to pass the ERISA legislation have left us the taxpayer holding the proverbial bag.
That is why most all companies have left traditional pension plans in favor of 401(k) plans which means all workers only have recourse to their own 401(k) monies and there is no recourse to the company or the government as guarantor.
Thus, Unions can insist on "traditional pensions" and increased pay without regard to the economic welfare of the company because when the company fails they get a government guaranty. There is no responsibility for one's own welfare and investment decisions; just rely on Uncle Sam and all of the taxpayers to take care of you.

I guess I'm in a different situation. Having house paid off and pennies for the land, those kinds of wages would go a long way for me. Oh, and no kids.

I was in aviation electronics/troubleshooting on FA-18s. I walked into power generation knowing they had something to do with the light turning on when I flipped the light switch on.
