Help!! I'm getting cold feet

I'm set to pick up a 2017 Limited CC 4x4 today. It's a 1 owner, all service at Toyota, everything up to date (spark plugs, fluids, etc. etc.). The dealer is putting a new set of Yokohama tires on for me. Only trouble is it has 190k on it. The previous owner used it as a commercial vehicle and drove across the southeast frequently and put about 30k-40k a year on it. The exterior and interior are immaculate. It definitely wasn't a "work truck", although it was used for his job.

I've got the check written for $26.5k but I'm getting cold feet now. Things are INSANE right now and it's the best deal I can find, but it still seems like a lot of money for the miles. On the other hand, I feel like I shouldn't blink at 190k on a Toyota.

 

Stuff is crazy... Highway miles I've heard are better than stop and go traffic. I'm at 280k+ with an 07 5.7l with minor maintenance, occasional issue like sticking calipers here and there, but nothing major.

 

I just bought a 2015 DC 160k miles for $25k. The interior being soooo clean is what got me and I had been looking for a truck all year.

 

I'd go for it.
If it doesn't have cat shields, that would be my first purchase for it..

Same here, it's been almost a year looking. I just worry about resale on something with over 200k (which it will be in a matter of 12 months). But if I'm going to drive the wheels off I guess it doesn't really matter.

 

Dont take my word for it…. but I heard from multiple ppl that the used market will start calming down after the end of the year. I’m a hypocrite tho since I bought recently but I was in a situation where I needed a replacement.

But…Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have the best deal, you don’t, and there will always be a better one, ironically always shows a couple days after you buy… it’s a lot of money so don’t ever impulse buy and take a step back.

but then again, seems like it’s well taken care of, commercial use is kinda eh, but it prob was a tax claim perk, the mileage is fine but proper maintenance history far trumps any mileage value.

That means 190,000 miles of bulk 0W-20 oil (I'm told it's thin as water) changed at 10,000 mile intervals. And changed by the lowest skill tech at the dealership.

I ain't saying that's bad, but I ain't not saying it either.

$26k is in the normal market range for that truck right now. You need it or you don't. You can afford it or you can't. The truck is what it is. Have it inspected and if it's in great shape, these trucks are built to last lots of miles so don't let the mileage alone be the deal breaker.

 

If the intention of purchasing the truck satisfy the following, go for it:

1. It's what you want. Model, year (range), setup (engine, cab size and all)
2. Maintenance, can't stress this one enough to begin with. Any higher mileage vehicle would fall under this. 3rd party PPI would always be preferred, but not always possible.
3. If you intent to drive until it falls apart (unlikely, it may outlast you, unless nature indicates otherwise *cough cough*), resale value should never enter the chat room to begin with.
4. Can you part with the requested amount? If somehow something happens tomorrow, do you have the funds to cover the immediate emergency?

I think we can all agree that "most" Toyotas are in-destructible, they tend to outlast the owner than the other way around.
And also based on that, unless some major life circumstance changed that calls for a change in the vehicle, we tend to keep/drive/mod the truck until the wheels fall off or you fall off.
I personally think 190K on a 2017 is a tad high, but highway miles as others have stated, is going to be easy on the truck than city stop-n-go traffic. Beside, for million mile Toyota? That's barely broken-in as it is.

If you feel comfortable with the above, sign you name and grab the key(s) and enjoy.
There is a whole world out there for you to enjoy and life it too short to think cold feet.

 

Things are swinging the other direction right now, so it really depends on your position...

If you NEED a truck right now, then you have to work within the current market. If you don't need to make the purchase right now, I'd wait for the market to finish correcting itself and then purchase.

Regarding resale... If you buy a Tundra w/nearly 200k, I'd think your plan would be to run it till it's done. If you're plan is to drive it 50k then sell it, yeah you're going to take a hit at current market price vs. what you'll get for it later.

Things to keep in mind. Starter, AC Compressor, and alternators are things that seem to need replacing on these trucks between 200k-250k; these items are not easily accessible in the Tundra and what should be minor in repair costs can be pricey if you have to take the truck in for those types of items to be replaced. $1000-$1250/ea w/labor (just food for thought).

 

Check out the brake pedal rubber for wear and the hitch safety chain loops for paint wear. If both look good, carry on and deal. I'd write a second check for 24, 500 and lay it down in front of the seller and see how it goes. One could always negotiate any difference in cash.

 

I would take a 6 y.o./190k miles truck over a 6 y.o./30k miles any day. The best thing that could happen to a decently designed vehicle (and gen2 Tundra is one of them) is highway driving. Plenty of cooling and lubrication, steady, low engine revs, very little transmission shifts, no rodents chewing up wires.

 

is that stuff more age based or miles based though?

 

I think mostly mileage, at least that was my experience in my '08... but, I'd imagine location (salt belt, etc...) could play a role as well

My '08 (had since new, and it currently sits at just over 271k) spent most of its time in Vegas, so dry hot climate. We towed for a fews years w/it, long road trips over the years, and my daily driver (lots of starts and stops)...

 

Do you remember how old the truck was when some of that stuff started going out? How long after 2008 did you hit 200k miles?

$35 000 CAD for a truck with 305000km? not a chance I would buy that.

I was considering selling my 2013 limited, supercharged, dc, all service up to date, with 135000km for $40k CAD.

 

2017 was a good year, not a ton of electronic garbage on it. If they are almost exclusively highway miles and no towing then you probably have a lot of life left in it. If it's everything you want and youve done your research, I'd say go for it.

$27k is a lot, but you can't get anything decent for cheap anymore.

 

I think I hit 200k about 2.5 years ago

Starter went out at about 215k

AC compressor out at about 240k

Alternator was this summer at about 260k

 

You can see if he was on the brakes a lot (city driving, aggressive driving, towing etc). A lot of brakes is a lot of accelerating.

 

Personally, I would probably use my $26k as a down payment for one with much, much lower miles. Probably a '21 that's still under warranty. Then you can add the Toyota extended warranty on too. You'll be guaranteed you'll have a great truck with lots and lots of life left.

I know making payments suck, and the current interest rates really suck, but sometimes it may just be the better option.

 

If the truck was primary driven on the highway the rubber won't show much wear. However, if it has been worn quite a bit, it's a signal of heavy brake pedal usage, which indicates city driving. I wouldn't want to pay more than maybe 12 grand for a truck with 200k city miles on the clock. Good luck!

 

To second what @ColoradoTJ said, don't be afraid to hop on a plane. The last 3 trucks I've bought were fly n buy. Called the seller, had them take video and photos of everything I wanted. Booked r/t flights and inspected in person upon arrival. Only walked away once. You can find what you want. The internet is a rabbit hole.

also to note- I never think about resale value on a toyota. You buy it to own it for life. And if and when you do sell it you'll get good money for the miles comparative to other brands. Toyotas just hold higher resale, it's simple math. But again I don't buy the brand for that value, I buy it because it's the brand I support and know will perform best with least amount of hassles.

 

FYI, 6 months ago, Raptors were being sold $10k+ MSRP, today, dealer is emailing me giving me $5k discount off MSRP.

 

It's got another 810k in it at least. I don't know about the prices in your area but I say go for it. 2016-2018s with the 38 gallon fuel tanks are the best of the second gens.

 

As to the comments on the prices, the so called experts have been saying the used car market is due to cool off since 2021. I'm not holding my breath.

 

Hey, give those experts some credits, they were right, used G wagons came down in prices! instead of 300k for a 2yrs old G63, now it's only $200k! what a deal!
