I use a hitch mounted winch because I can easily move it to both front and rear as well as in the bed, plus front and rear on my 4Runner. Nothing serious (2500 lb) as I don't go extreme stupid or wild. Instead I just have two blocks so I can do triple line pull. Also always have a 3 ton come a long in the truck and a high lift jack. Keep in mind that a winch is strongest with only about a half of layer of line on the spool. Mine has a remote fob so I can be in the driver's seat and winch simultaneously as well. Had an 8k Ramsey on my Fords and it was a beast of a winch.

If your positive youll never rely on it to get you out of a bad spot when your alone etc then no need to drop big money on a warm or whatever. With that said I had an x2o SB one time that worked great until it popped a solenoid on maybe it's 4-5th use and left me in a pickle with 60'+ of cable out that I had to roll up and strap to the front bumper.
