So I was looking through the wiring diagrams (pulled from another post showing all diagrams for all years) and I noticed that in the engine compartment, connector d1 is for the millimeter wave radar system. That looks to hook into the larger system (colored blue in the diagram).

While it's likely to need a new harness behind the dash, plus a module and maybe a new instrument cluster, is it theoretically possible to add this system into my Tundra? I've got a 2016 Double Cab, Column Shift 4x4 SR5. I've attached the diagram for reference. Take a look at pages 6 and 7.

It would likely be very difficult, but with enough $$$ anything is possible.

I know @RainMan_PNW added BSM, but I would guess thats much less complicated. Still, he's the only one I'd ask because he'll be honest about it, and whether or not he feels qualified to answer in the first place.

Who's the other wiring wizard? I thought it was something like jeff 5_7. I can't find his name when searching.

Theoretically not impossible, but would require you to replace a lot more than just a couple components.

In 2018 when they added the safety sense system, they reworked a LOT of the wiring and interconnecting elements of these trucks. From the instrument cluster to the core ECU to the added front-facing camera to the CANBUS to how the fog lights are controlled things were changed.

@Jeff_5_7 has researched a lot of it in his RCSB “TRD Pro” build that started life as a Gen 2. Ultimately, it would be a significant and expensive project.

Much larger task than it seems like, the update in 2018 (which added the radar sensor) changed alot of things, remapped large parts of the vehicle network. Yes you would need the newer cluster and steering wheel controls to control/interact with the radar sensor and setup. However these newer ECUs are not directly compatible with the older trucks.

The new instrument cluster will not work on a pre 2017 truck without heavy modification (half the gauges will not respond and you will have errors all over the place). I highly doubt the radar sensor would be able to send proper signals to the pre 2017 Engine ECU to control speed, slow down/adaptive cruise. It would try to send the messages but the older ecu wouldn't understand them as its not programmed to see them.

I know for sure the messages to display the cruise set speed and if cruise control is on/off are very different between the 2017 to 2018. I don't even think the 2017 shows a set speed.

The additions of the Toyota Safety Sense system in 2018, made all the ecus in the truck much smarter with alot more data being transmitted between them. So much so, Toyota added a network gateway as a "router" for all the data. Integrating a part of the newer system into an older truck is extremely difficult. The older ECUs are not programmed to see or understand the newer added on data.

A large part of the "new" data is transmitted from different locations. This is why the 2018 instrument cluster appears half dead when plugged into a pre 2017 truck. The newer cluster is looking for the data to drive the gauges in the new location however the 2017 ECUs are broadcasting the data in the old locations.

I see! Thank you for the explanation. Basically it would require replacing all the wiring harnesses with the newer ones, and adding in the updated modules? I doubt I'll do this, was mostly curious.

Regardless, is there a different way to get lane keeping and acc? The acc is what I'm mostly interested in. It's super useful and I tend to take my truck on long drives.

The lane keep is dependent on the camera behind the rear view mirror, and the adaptive cruise is 100% reliant on the radar. To get those, you would have to do the full overhaul of wiring and programming. It would be far easier to shop for a 2018+ truck. Not sure if it'd be cheaper, but it might be.
