Can I still operate my 06 access cab without air bag installed during steering wheel swap. Can the warning light and DTC's that I presume will get set off be able to be erased/turned off when I reinstall airbag with proper reader/scanner? I'm new to the sight but look forward to your replies. Thanks Rob

You can technically operate it without, like, the truck won't NOT run or anything. But you're going to throw SRS light.

SRS DTCs can't (or at least couldn't, last I checked) be cleared by normal scanners, same way TPMS can't be managed by normal scanners. You need one that's capable of managing SRS specifically. Even if you cleared the SRS codes, the moment the ECU sees there's no airbag attached, it'll throw SRS codes again the next time you power on the truck, so you're back to square 1 again. It's up to you, really. Others have been able to trim down airbag covers though, and make it look generally "OK". If I were you, I'd just get a used steering wheel and airbag assembly with radio controls from a compatible vehicle. You should be able to find one in matching color at www.car-part.com or pay slightly more for a wider array of options on fleaBay. At the latter, the average price for wheel and airbag with controls runs between $200-350 depending on the condition when I was hunting a year or two ago. Or you can get the wheel for $60-100, and the airbag assembly for $100-200.

I've got a spare leather steering wheel in charcoal grey from an '06 4Runner with controls sitting in my shop, incl cruise control, just no airbag, no tilt control. If it helps. At the rate I'm going, I'll never end up using the damn thing.

Thanks Stig. Already have compatible wheel with radio controls off a 06 sequoia. My innovia 5160 should be able to cancel any srs lights as it allowed me to cancel the tmps light. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting myself in a "limp mode" situation like I experienced a couple years ago when my secondary smog/air pump went bad. Just a thumbs up for all the effort you put in this sight...I read the detailed thread you left about wanting to buy a first gen. tundra.....just leaving this reply is frustrating with spell check ect. Well mission accomplished....changed rear diff oil....not before disconnecting battery for steering wheel swap with radio controls. After draining diff oil and adding new almost an hour went by.....knew I was in a comfortable safe zone to mess with air bag
