Just got a call from my local toyota dealer and they need to replace the bank 1 turbo. What kind of a job is it? I don't think this dealership has done one. I know there has been a lot talked about this but had a hard time finding answers. Thanks, Chuck

No. They can also replace them through the wheel well. Cab off is an option, a bit extreme, but gives full exposure. Probably dealers choice at the shop. Passenger side has for sure been done through the wheel well. Not 100% on that drivers side.

I would be really surprised if the turbo cant be removed through the wheel well. At least on my Ecoboost, i can pull the turbos in a couple of hours in my garage with basic hand tools. Its actually really easy.

OK, I had check engine lite and others on the dash. Happened 3 weeks ago and went away after a few hours, Came back Sunday with check engine lite and others, reduced power etc. Talked to dealer this am and this will be the second one that they have done, also have a third one in their Q. They will go though the wheel well. They jack up the engine and transmission and support so thats what the service manager said. I have 18,000 miles and once fixed not sure what I will do? My son in law says look at dodge 1500? I purchased the extended warranty so will see, might keep it…

Sorry to hear about this, if memory serves I think previous guys who had this done on the drivers side bank had to do it cab off due to the steering shaft interfering with access. I could be wrong.

Also if you get a moment could you post your pertinent details here:

How much work is it to lift the cab on a Tundra? Different animal but I had the cabs lifted on 3 Super Dutys I had. At first, I was nervous as hell about it but once I got over the shock I liked that it game them better access to the motor. I would be surprised if it was more than 3 hrs to lift the cab.
Don't know if that's the case on Tundras.

From what we’ve seen it’s not terribly difficult. Agreed on preference for the mechanic to have full easy access. He/she is going to have the chance to do a better job working without encumbrances of working in the engine bay.
