See, I thought the same about Seattle and Portland... In fact, I enjoyed walking around DC near Chinatown more than Seattle. I was in Chicago in 2019 and thought it was nicer than Seattle.

Politics got in the way of some policing policies in Vegas for a bit. Metro eliminated a bunch of their street enforcement teams, and about the same time we were dealing w/cartel turf disputes on the NE and SE ends of town; which resulted in a significant increase in shootings those couple of years. In fact, I believe we were on pace w/Chicago for about the first 6-7 months of the year (with about 1/2 to 1/3 of the population)

This link shows homicides since about 2017 in the Valley and tracks location, weapon type, etc... Just as an example the month of July 2023 had 19 incidents reported by the three main agencies.

What made it unpractical for you...

 

Carrying while drinking/drunk (not a fan) but mostly worried about printing with sketchy fucks all around me. One of my close buddies checked a pistol so I felt pretty good.

Just went to the restroom to take a leak. Somehow I managed to apply just enough pressure to my gym shorts to make the draw string stand up just enough to split the stream and make me piss down my left leg and on my shoe. I just want to go home now.

Makes sense... A lot of shit heads there work in teams of multiple assailants. So, you'll get 1 or 2 dudes (or females) distracting the target, while the attackers go after the victim; same thing for car-jackings and such usually teams of 2 or more going after the victim from multiple angles. It's one of the reasons the state ended up passing what was known as the car-jacking law (right to defend). Basically, it made an attempt to enter an occupied vehicle by any force (even strong armed robbery involving no apparent weapons) prima facia evidence that the victim was in reasonable danger of death or great bodily harm and could therefore deploy deadly force to protect him/herself without the normal preclusions. It's one of the reasons that you didn't see people rioting and blocking or mobbing cars during the last few year, and it curbed the car jackings pretty well for a while.

 

A law that actually reduces crime, who would of thought!
