Sweet long bed. I had my Dad's 2010 double cab long bed with me for work one summer in the West Texas oil fields and could flirt with 20 mpg @ 70 mph if the wind wasn't howling.

I hear you, and I think this is where we differ. What is creating the opportunity for a collision is not the guy driving 5-10 below the limit, especially when that is generally legally allowable all the way down to 45mph (40mph in some states). I don't get close to that...usually around 65 and firmly in the right lane. It's the people who are incredulous that someone would have the audacity to slow them down or not get out of their way immediately. Those people breaking the law are the ones creating the opportunity for a collision.

As an aside, slow traffic in the left lane infuriates me. Most state laws say some version of "keep right to pass" and/or "slower traffic keep right". What I usually see is the opposite...long trains of people speeding in the left lane, and drivers pass on the right to shoot any gap larger than 1 car length. Defensive driving has become "stay close enough to the 80mph vehicle in front of you so no one takes your spot in line.":facepalm::facepalm:

I think you guys are pulling opposite ends of the same string.

One end is idiots that just finished a fast and furious double feature that not only is immortal, but also above the law.

The other end is the ppl that panic when the wind blows a little too hard or they are 100% unaware of their surroundings and just do what ever.

The string is UNPREDICTABILITY. Accidents happen when someone encounters something they didn't expect and thus didn't prepare to avoid.

Here, you can be ticketed for disrupting the flow of traffic. If 95% of ppl are doing 10 over but you want the honest speed limit, you are creating a bottleneck and causing everyone else to avoid you. Which increases the risk of a wreck.

But also the opposite. If you're doing 10 over dodging and weaving for no reason other than Vin Desiel is your hero, you are the problem causing others to slow or swerve to avoid you.

For clarity: "you" being a general term and not a specific call out to anyone on this forum.

That's not to say it's okay to speed or go super slow. It's just an observation that if EVERYONE is passing you or there's a long line behind you, you are in fact the problem. Speed up or move over. And if you need to pass everyone and risk a pit maneuver clipping, plan better. Sit back and accept the consequences of it.

When I was reading news today in the morning, seeing this made me legit low key panic!!

    Screenshot_20220609-122010_Brave.jpg

    https://www.wistv.com/2022/06/09/slowpoke-law-leading-citations-some-south-carolina-drivers/

Upon further examination, this applies to people who bog down the "speeding" lane. Breathing returns to normal. Since I always do my thing in the outermost right lane, I am safe.

Ps- I've seen many law enforcement agents on the side of the road and driving by as I was saving gas and there were no issues with me occupying right lane and operating the vehicle within safe speed limit tolerances.

Yes but what most people don’t seem to understand is that this applies to slowpokes in the left lane—not to people cruising at a legal speed in the right lane.

Again most state laws specify for slower traffic to keep right. From the article above:

Anytime someone is traveling below the speed limit in the left lane, around other cars; the risk of something dangerous happening increases.

“Most people who are in that left lane, they’re going at least the speed limit and they can run up on you.” Hovis said. “There’s not any break light showing, no turn signals.”

Not if you are doing a legal speed in the right lane OR doing the speed limit in the left.

    Again from the article:

Let’s be clear, this law doesn’t give you the right to speed. Troopers are still enforcing the current limit.

Some odd logic being applied in this thread. OP, congrats on your endeavor. I too am slowing down. I’ll leave earlier so I can slow down and save some gas.

It’s hard for me to believe the widespread complaints about gas prices when I continually see folks driving 80 in a 70.

The trend is slowly starting to change. I see more and more slow drivers these days vs half a year ago. Also, yesterday going home, there was barely any difference in speed; everyone was doing no more than 60 in all lanes. Police monitoring likely played a role though:rofl:

I have three vehicles, they accumulate... I have this thing I do where I drive whichever one has gas in it. It helps, at least mentally until I end up with three empty tanks.

Okay okay okay...not trying to come across as a jerk here, but I have a hard time believing any of this. 22-25mpg? I'm more inclined to think that's unpossible in our trucks, even with a keen eye on driving habits and feathering the throttle with a baby's touch. I've had FOUR hybrids in the past and have always exceeded the EPA MPG in all of them (8-10mpg more than my ex-wife as well), so I'm keenly aware of how I drive and yeah, it's a Tundra, but I'm also always trying to increase my miles per tank. A recent road trip netted me about 18mpg and I was pretty happy with that.

My proof? The trip meter vs. gas gauge means literally nothing in a bunch of pictures on the internet. I'll couple that with some of the pics posted here, if you look closely, tell more of the story.

It's more believable that you used half a tank to go 10.6 miles than you're getting 22+ mpg. I'm open to being proven wrong...but I'll be a skeptic until then.

This last one had screwy miles because I took off terminals to clean them. I took photo before doing that.

Give it a few more weeks so gas goes up to 20 bucks a pop and it'll become a practical reality:thumbsup:

Then it'll be time to get the CBR250R out of storage - 77mpg! Probably less as I'm not a little guy...but still significantly better than the Tundra. Any Tundra, even at 22.00001 mpg ;)

Although, the flip side is we're working from home again, so I don't really go anywhere.

Filled up today and got 20.7.

First bar on fuel gauge was mega efficient:turtleride:, but after that it was all fk mpg's. Had to run ac because didn't want to die behind the wheel, haul stuff, city driving, and excessive idling with ac on because famine passenger needs cold while I shop materials:frusty: also fast driving because everywhere LATE!!!

It feels great to be normal again. Oh and 90 dollar fill up:woot:

Little update, nobody needs to hear it, but here it goes. Last couple fill ups netted me roughly 20mpg. Too much AC, idling and 70nph driving were likely a culprit. I still believe that 25.x mpg wasn't a fluke because I swear, it felt like I was sipping gas through a wd-40 straw, fuel gauge needle was barely moving. I almost died from heat too. Might be dangerous not using ac and rolled up windows when hot outside.(fan was running though)

My work commute takes(took) me across freeway and then backcountry rolling hills. This was a perfect opportunity to ultra maximize fuel economy. I was very intensely trying to achieve maximum mpg. No AC, 55mph and agnes obel on the stereo.

I remember having 260miles when the needle was showing half tank, but unfortunately I never got to finish my experiment. I also remember having about 350 miles on odometer and still had about 1.5 bars left of gas, but due to stress of rodents, I forgot everything.

This does make me a little sad because I could've pushed maybe 25-26mpg. Not sure if I ever get such an opportunity again with commute perfection.

    Another mpg report.
So, I did another tank of gas. Somewhat mediocre. Same problem as originally, couldn't get past 23mpg. It's understandable though, because I had a money passenger who refused to drive without AC and wanted me to do like 90, because "gAnG, yOu DrIvE liKe A tUrTle!!" . I may have or may not have had to comply. Also, some city driving and well, you get 22.2mpg.

    Screenshot_20230802-153250_Gallery.jpg

    Screenshot_20230802-144416_RealCalc.jpg

    19.2gallons went in. $3.54 :spending:

On my way home, I was quite pleased though, since I got all greens and it's very satisfying when you time your deceleration going uphill and motor doesn't downshift!:yay:

No way in hell of getting 23 mpgs in a 4.6. They can barely get it in that new POS they call the 3rd gen.

I have too much trouble keeping my foot out of it to ever see numbers like that... And the heavier tires and increased ride height aren't doing me any favors.

But after towing our travel trailer all over the mountains and yielding just under 10mpg, I'm happy enough to be averaging 15mpg again:cool:

Set the cruise at 55mph on a trip across town the other day and got 21.7mpg in a 5.7L V8 4x4 with a mid-rise topper. Not bad!

I haven't been able to replicate higher meg's for a while now. All my commute these days is rolling backcountry hills with some city driving in between. My tundra hasn't seen any highways maybe a ear by now.

The result is a measly 20-21mpg.

Lower it. Get good street tires. It will look cool, handle and ride better, and you'll get 23mpg easy.
