Dealer stated that they will take it off and provide give me back the original cost. I assume they take the tonneau cover only since the rails are part of the truck ?

Reason - going to buy the bakflip that does not come with the rails - according to the retailer.

How do you like the MX4 compared to factory installed cover?

Its more modern then the Toyota tonneau - better designed and lighter as well . The Toyota version is definitely an older design in my opinion

How did you get your $ back from Toyota? I have had zero luck with that.

The dealership told me it was an available option considering there was no solution.

Who did you approach at the dealer? The service dept? Or a manager?

I just called the service department and it is an option from Toyota.

I hate going to the dealer but I guess I am going to have to try that since I have had zero luck with Toyota via their customer service phone line. Brand engagement or whatever BS name they give it. But that will have to wait until we return from our coming road trip. I will need the cover for that. As you noted, I will call them first to see if it can be arranged that way. Did I say I hate going to the dealer?

From an earlier thread on this topic I came to the conclusion that the Toyota tanneau cover was an MX4 rebranded to Toyota. Is this not the case? I wonder what the differences are then. I have an MX4 from BackFlip, so should I stop worrying about the recall problem?

Its lighter for one , seems that the seals are of a different material and less likely to bind . Also had an issue with the toyota that the rubber near the hinge would pop off but its too early to tell.

Do you think the MX4 is immune from the coming loose and flying off problem? I did find that the thumb nuts on the front of the MX4 kept coming loose over time. So I replaced them with nylon lock nuts and Loctite. They are holding fine now.

IMO, the problem is unlikely to be those thumb nuts. But, of course, Toyota isn't saying. At the snail's pace they seem to approaching this recall, we may never know.

If anyone wants to get rid of their OEM cover within four hours drive of Chicago PM me. I’m looking for one.

The OEM cover was made by RealTruck. Same Company that makes covers under a dozen different names including BaK (MX4). The design and quality of the panels are different but the rails and tie down hardware look the same to me. Some one told me the OEM didn’t have lock washers. My MX4 does.

Buy from someone else. The MX4 comes with mounting rails and the hardware to remount your OEM tie down rails just below them.
