I went through the same thing.
Got a divorce and ended up with the kids when they were small. She thought of them as her own and helped me raise them. Smartest dog I've ever known. I think I cried more when I lost her than when I lost my father (not saying much, but still). Everytime I thought about getting another, I thought, it won't be fair because no dog will ever fill her shoes. Took me 8 yrs to finally do it and I was wrong. I had no problems loving the next one.

 

When we lived in CO, my dad adopted a collie. She got in the garbage once. The second time he grabbed her in the act, and shoved her in the can and closed the lid, and left her in there for a minute or two, then pulled her out, have her a sharp no and bite her nose. I never laughed so hard. She never went into the trash again and he became her alpha basically immediately.

 

If it makes you feel any better, I have had no luck getting my boxer to stop eating toilet paper after 3 years.

Wife and I have rescued all of ours and 3 have been geriatric rescues (hospice). We went you g after we put our last bully down because of the kids, but we've already discussed rescue/foster work in retirement. Big fans of the "who saved who" and "tell your dog I said hi" mentality.

I think all dogs treated kindly are loyal and grateful, but they are all individuals. Stella wasn't a rescue, but it was a random aligning of stars that let me find her. I've had rescues, too, and she was the most loyal I've ever personally had the pleasure of adopting. That might be my mother's fault though. I was a kid and she wasn't really stable for dogs.

 

I had a RV 30-amp outlet installed on the side of my house years ago. Got full power with A/C!

Work's been crazy busy and is just ramping up. Looking like I need to add 50-75% more to my department by end of year to stay on par with the work we have booked.
Was on the road last week for work recon and conference - unfortunately I was in Denver and didn't even get a chance to reach out and say hi @T-Rex266 (I'll be heading back again before long though). Had two presentations to give (one as part of the keynote) and then was in meetings and stuff the entire rest of the time (including after hours).
Yes, I jumped into the water with the sharks on the Alpine HU deal - that's about the only chance I've had to jump in here (and mostly because a few friends on text messages kept sending me links to comment on).
