Do we have a "best" brand / parts list anywhere for rear brake servicing on here. Noticed the ol' slack in the cable at the diff, played with the "equalizer" to even it out.

Seems there have been some troubles with aftermarket drums, shoes and OEM can run ya quite a bit for the parts.
1 post I read guy had upwards of a grand in parts?! Looking for links to posts if we have em for kits etc. I don't feel the need to do a disc but if it's gonna be close to OEM and nothing else is fairly trouble free swap....what has everyone had best luck with?

I had trouble with aftermarket drums, but shoes were fine. What all are you looking at replacing? I thought @FirstGenVol wasn't able to get oem for the bell cranks on one side, but could on the other.

I guess just all the internal wear parts maybe cabling if that's whats causing slack. My drums may be fine. I don't know, haven't pulled anything apart yet. Is there a spec on when to replace the drums or were your just rusted to shit?

I'm wrapping my head around all of it with reading but when it all comes together iny head while it's apart I'd like to have all of what I need to fix.

Forgot to ask about the special tools may be needed to make things easier? Sounds like not absolutely necessary just makes job less frustrating from what I've read.

It was the self adjusters they discontinued. I had to go aftermarket on one side.

I'm sure there is a spec in the service manual but I don't know it offhand.

In 2022 I rebuilt my rear drums somewhat. I replaced all the springs, self adjusters, wheel cylinders. I did not replace my shoes or drums. The shoes still had a lot of life left in them and I have no issues causing me to think there is anything wrong with the drums.

Here is a parts list courtesy of @jpink . I have this in PDF too if you want me to email it to you. I would recommend buying two cans of brake cleaner, removing your drums, hosing everything down and see how it all looks. From there you can decide what actually needs to be replaced.

As for tools, one of these was very helpful.

    @FirstGenVol that’s a heck of a list.
A pdf file uploaded here is not a big deal in case others could use that list.

Sweet! I'll have to track all those parts down for an '06 but at least I have the a list now with names.of parts. Really doesn't look to add up to more than a couple hundo at a glance.

I'm pretty confident most of the part numbers work for all 1st gens. John made that list for his 05 DC. Always verify by adding your VIN on the Toyota website.

My cable has some slack in it and my brakes feel fine if that helps you at all. I've never laid eyes on anything under my rear drums. I'm almost certain they are rusted in place so until I hear a noise I'm probably just going to leave them be.

Mine has never really had the slack in it I noticed the other day. Which is why I think the rear brakes need some attention? I've used the P-brake in the past after reading about the self adjusting part of it and how it works. Never noticed slack after doing that but now I have some and it makes me think something isn't working correctly now.
To my knowledge the rear brakes haven't been serviced and maybe it's time. Just under 150,000 on the clock.

Looks like a rear brake makeover is in my future.
Went to to take some slack out on the backside, and snapped off the 10MM bolt with little effort.
Are all those parts listed Toyota Stealership parts?
Thanks in advance, and for for posting all that up.

@HBTundra Rockauto website was pretty helpful when I re-did mine. I used Toyota drums, the rest was aftermarket.
