I'm looking at tires and saw that the new(ish) Toyo ATIII is available in a 35x11.5R17. This seems to be the perfect size: can still fit a full size spare under the bed, better clearance and gas mileage than a 12.5" wide tire, but still a true 35" tall.
HOWEVER, it is a load range C. The specs say max load of 2910 lbs. and max PSI of 50.
I get that load range C is usually 6 ply and E is 10, so resistance to punctures will be worse than E. However, most wheels are rated ~ 2600 lbs, so the tire is actually rated higher.
Does anyone run load range C tires?

I have always upgraded to C load tires on most of my past 4x4 vehicles. Great load range- stronger than stock tires but not so heavy to cause problems or a performance hit. I would run C load on my Tundra if they made them in the size tire I run. Very few, if any C load tires available in sizes that work on the usual 18 or 20 inch wheels run on Tundras.
You will have no issue running C load, they will be an upgrade from the stock tires.

Going through this process now. Looking at the ATIII for stock size 275/65/18. They come in SL, C and E. I was going to go C. However the load range for C is lower than the stock P rated tire that comes on my truck. Does that matter much? 116 stock Michelin (SL). 113 Toyo ATIII (C). Then I noticed that the C AT III is only 1 pound lighter than the E load. Will the gas mileage and ride still be better with the C even though it’s essentially the same weight?
