I recently had all of my transmission, differentials, and transfer case fluids changed to AMSOIL that was done be a local dealership and my Tundra does have the tow package.

While driving on a steep mountain trail at very low speeds in 4W hi, my transmission temps climbed up almost to the red. I caught it before it set off any codes and was able to manage the temps by pausing here and there and giving it some time to cool down or by turning off 4W in less steep spots. Once I got to flat terrain the temps came down rather quickly.

Admittedly the truck was working pretty hard getting up the mountain, and as I've never had the temp gauge go above normal I'm interested in anyone's opinion on potential issues or similar experiences.

Truck had no issues on the way down, was not in 4W and was basically walked down the trail to keep it from sliding. I drove it in 4W hi for several miles on normal grades under normal speeds and had no temp issues as well.

4 low will solve your issues if your crawling up a long steep incline.

This. Always. Never run 4Hi when you're under a load or your truck is otherwise working harder than normal (i.e., steep inclines esp at high altitudes).

It was my first time putting the truck through something like that, so I can't really say whether or not the fluid difference had something to do with it.

Not sure if I'll have another chance to go there this year. If I do I'll go with 4W lo and see if that prevents it.
