I’m going to buy the Alpine headunit package from Trail Grid pro. Where is a good place to put the replacement microphone? Do I have to have a wire fish to feed it to put on top of the steering wheel cluster? Any pictures would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have already searched the forum as well.

Mine is mounted in one of the switch blanks under the center of the console below the AC controls.

I’ve only ever seen the factory mic for a hands free system installed in the headliner above you, not below.

Do you need to pop off the trim or can you just feed the wire and squeeze behind trim without removing

I posted a pic. Just drill the hole and use JB weld on the back side.

FWIW, many of the microphones and mic sensitivity in the head units are tuned for a particular area.

Generally, higher is better. I have always installed hands-free mics at the edge of the headliner above the rear view mirror. Installing them in the "corner" created by the top of the A-pillar and the windshield can sometimes cause audio issues and echoing for people on the other side of the phone. It may be something you want to try out multiple locations with someone on the phone to see where you sound the best and where it will pick up most effectively in your normal driving position.

Removing the A-pillar trim is silly easy. Use a piece or butyl, bubble gum, or just a bit of duct tape to grip and pull the small bolt cover a bit below the headliner. Says “SRS or Air Bag” on it. It’s just a bolt cover, I promise!!! One bolt under there and it’s out.

My mic is just to the left of the rear view mirror with the wire tucked above headliner. Once the A-piller trim is out of the way, it’s very easy to fish the wire under the dash. No other trim to remove.

This will be my first post, as I am a long time lurker, first time poster. I just recently installed a sony setup from Trail Grid Pro and it came with a bracket to mount the mic in the factory location in the console of the headliner. It fit perfect and running the wire was easy. Also I have had great feedback about the sound quality. Hope this helps.
