Not sure if this is the right section of the forum to post in. I didn't see a brakes section under "Tundra Garage" so I'm making a post here.

I've recently got a 2008 Tundra which is missing the parking brakes in the rear wheels. I was planning on replacing the parking brake cables and parking brake shoes anyways, but I was not expecting to see nothing when I've removed the rear rotors. I've got the parking brake shoes and the parking brake hardware from RockAuto, but I believe there are more components to the parking brake assembly than just the shoes and the hardware, for example, there are some levers that the shoes attach to. At this point, I'm thinking I would go ahead to replace the rear backing plates as well, since the bottom halves of the current ones are pretty rusted.

What are my options to "rebuild" the parking brake? This would cost me close to a grand if not more if I get all the parts from the dealer, which I do not want to. I'm currently looking on car-parts.com to find the rear backing plates with the parking brake assembly attached, but the issue is that junk yards typically just sell the whole rear axle. I'm also asking various junk yards to see if they'd be willing to sell me just those parts off of the rear axle.

I wanted to see if I'm missing some other options. Also, for the compatibility of the rear backing plates and the parking brake assembly, I believe models from 2007 to 2013 are compatible for my 2008. Would the 2.5 gen's also be compatible for my 2008 for these specific components? If so, I suppose I can expand my search radius.

Not sure, but I believe it will work. You could Google a brake rotor part number for each gen and or maybe a shoe set part number and that should give you your answer. The differentials however are likely different sized depending on engine size and tow package equipped or not. For that reason, an axle swap would be more complicated, especially if you have a 4x4 and need to match the front gears.

Looking at Rock Auto, it does appear there are overlaps for parking brake shoes and parking brake hardware between 2008 and 2019 tundra. However, Rock Auto doesn't have any backing plates, which is the most expensive part. I think I'm going to stop by the dealership parts store to verify part compatibility to be sure.

Can you get a wire wheel on a grinder or drill to clean up the existing plates? Just trying to help you save if possible.

One of the plate is largely intact, but the other one's bottom 1/3 to 1/2 has been rusted through. The plate which is largely intact is the side where I have yet to be able to take the wheel off. Going to replace the tires, and I'm expecting Costco to be able to remove that wheel. Once that's done, I will assess the situation on that one. I am not optimistic, and am currently assuming that I will replace the backing plates and all the parking brake components on that rear wheel as well.

Is the truck frame in good enough condition to justify throwing money at it?

Great question. Yes, I think so. For a 2008 Midwest truck with 280k miles, the frame appears to be pretty good. The bed does have two rust holes in the back two corners. The rhino liner covers those up.

Talk to a bunch of salvage yard, most of them aren't willing to sell just the backing plates and want to sell the whole rear axle as one unit. I found one salvage yard who was willing to sell just the backing plates with the parking brake components on them. When they tried to take those off, they couldn't, so they will ship me those with the spindles attached at the price point that was agreed upon. Although I will be paying more for shipping. Now I'm nervous about whether I'd be able to take the backing plate off of the spindle/knuckle. If I can't, then I might swap the whole spindle (assuming the gear ratio even match).

Pretty sure you are saying that they are sending you the axle shafts. Those may have the wheel bearings, abs tone rings (maybe built into the bearings depending on the year Toyota started that), etc. The axles are splined and will slide into the differential regardless of the gear ratio. Not sure if axles are the same size on both the smaller ring gear diameter (smaller engine without tow pkg) and the larger 10.5" ring gear differential that's used in trucks with the 5.7. I simply don't know enough to say what all has what components because I was a Ford man for a very long time and never messed around with these Trucks. However, I do know that there's different axle arrangements present in different years, engines, tow pkgs, etc.I also know some have the ABS tone ring built into the wheel bearing. If I were you, I would be replacing the bearings and seals regardless while it was all apart. That would also include draining and refilling the differential at the same time. It might be a good idea for you to purchase a Haynes Tundra service manual so you can have it for a guide along the way. Plus you will have it for everything else. Sorry, my knowledge is just limited on these Toyota designed axles so I can't help you much.

The two axle shafts arrived, and I have no idea how to get the backing plates off. And these backing plates aren't that much better than mine as far as rust is concerned. I should've had the savalage yard sent me photos first. They do have the full parking brake assembly attached through which was ultimately what I needed.

For anyone who might be doing a similar project, to fully re-construct the parking brake assembly (the stuff that's sandwiched between the rear rotor and backing plate), all you need is parking brake shoes, hardware kit, and parking brake actuator (W0133-2158803). The parking brake actuator was all that I needed.

I should've order just two of W0133-2158803 rather than two rear axles. LOL. Now I don't know what I'm going to do with the two axles.
