My kid is wanting to join her schools sporting clays team.

For those of you that hunt/shoot with shotguns and rifles, where do you secure your firearms?

At one point, I think there was someone who did some sort of bracket modification so the back of the rear seat could be more easily lifted out for storage behind the rear seat. This would be preferred, but I'm also looking at tool boxes for the back of the truck

I'm also looking looking at a locking box, over the wheel, tool box sort of thing. This one hangs off the rail.

This would be the only option I would consider "secure". I wouldn't trust a rifle/shotgun in a truck bed unless you're removing the rifle any time you're leaving the truck for longer than a quick run into the gas station.

I did. The guns we shoot don't fit. It's good for smaller stuff I guess. Looking into making some taller drawers for the bed and covering it with some black carpeting. My bed has a camper shell on it and a deck with a couple of drawers under it might work better.

Longing for the old days when pickups in the HS parking lot had racks with rifles in the rear windows. It was a simpler time.

I took my trap gun to school every week in the trunk of my car. They were simpler times with less nonsense and more accountability from kids.

I do like the deckd drawer method. Seems solid.

Did they remove the bolts for the day or just the ammo?

I ordered an ESP for under the rear seat, but it's the three box one. Not one long storage compartment. A few months after, I found a guy who used small steel containers (think high school cafeteria pans) and inserted it into the openings. Smart and way cheaper.

Flash forward and this idea would work only if you can do some light welding. Cut the rectangle hole, use 1/8" plate steel and make the box. Weld hinges and drill hole for lock. Add foam from a gun case to the bottom and top. It's not that hard. Especially when the ESP one is over $800. Might not be as pretty, but it'll be as secure depending on the lock you use. There's several out there. As far as fitting a long gun, not sure about a rifle, but for a shotty, just remove the barrel if it's too long.

Feels like this would block a lot of the rearview mirror. How much does it actually block it? I go back and forth on replacing my diamondback with a nice camper top.

visibility out the back isn’t that great with the camper top, but it’s not bad with the reverse camera. i can see most things using just the side mirrors.

I don't like anything in the rearview mirror but this solves a bigger problem of maintaining bed space. It's a great solution; maybe not for everyone, but really smart.
