2023 Tundra Backseat for dogs

First test of the platform coming this weekend with our new family member

 

Platform worked perfectly this weekend for a trip to the river. Cutting the 60/40 split was an excellent decision as it allowed my wife to sit back there with the pup and keep him out of trouble. The rear AC vents blow right at platform level so he loved laying in front of those to keep cool.

Yeah I should probably look for a seat cover too. Had the rear seats up and the dog was sliding all over the plastic trying to hang on for dear life and left scratch marks everywhere lol. Would love to get a cover that would slip over the rear seats folded up with cutouts for the headrests.

I've thought about a stretchy slip cover for the seat bottoms to keep dog hair out of the underside of the seat bottoms when flipped up

Would anyone be willing to share their measurements? This is what I measured for a 2023 Tundra Crewmax. This is just for the main board. I haven't made it to the underside or cutouts to access storage yet.

This one was clean. The foot was hinged for easy removal. Had a 60/40 split as well. (final version)

 

I'm using this doggie hammock for our 2 large dogs (65# and 100#) right now.

It works well, and the dogs seem to like it, but it does require them to jump higher into the truck, which will be a problem when they get older. I like this homemade platform idea, and will probably go that route eventually. Thanks for posting your design, hoki06.

Only downside I see on the hammock above is it does not protect the door cards…

I didn't feel like I needed them because my dogs are pretty chill when they travel. They mostly just sleep, occasionally they get up to stretch, or look out the windows when we stop, but they've never scratched my doors.

 

Here is the finished project. 3/4" Plywood and Marine Carpet with 1" foam padding underneath.

Is the platform attached or is it resting on the storage area? The dog is amazingly cute!

 

Just resting on the storage area. With the supports and blocking underneath, it's rock solid and doesn't slide at all. On the 40 side of the 60/40 split, if I put enough pressure on the front corner behind the passenger seat, I can get it to rock and lift a bit at the seam. I have an idea for dowels to lock the 60/40 seam together if needed but the pup is small enough now that it's not an issue. We'll see what happens when he's 75lbs next year.

Was always thinking about building one of these and I had that question pop up in my head.. “surely someone has built one before right?” And sure enough haha I’ll be picking up some plywood this week. Have some leftover burbur carpet from stairs at our old place that will be perfect for this. Our teenage fur ball Rocco will be even more spoiled haha great work on the platforms fellas. Love the 60/40 split idea!

 

Fits my truck pretty well and protects my doors big time. I forgot to put them on once and my slobbery dogs went to work on my doors lol. I'll take some pics and post the coverage they provide.

 

I just built one for our dog last weekend using these measurements and it came out perfect. I did the 60/40 split to make install and removal easier. I hinged the legs/feet as well. Just did a road trip north, 5hrs there and 5hrs home, our dog LOVED it. She’s so much more comfortable, and this way our seats don’t get damaged. I was able to find a large dog bed on Amazon to go on top to make it extra comfy.

 

Love all these great ideas for backseat dogs! I’ve been trying to come up with some ideas myself and these have been inspirational! The carpet adds such a nice touch. But what about those of us whose dogs serve as co-pilots? Has anyone come up with a solution for a big bed/box area for the front seat? I’ve jury rigged a couple of things in my last Toyota, but I’d like something nicer for this ride. Also, I should probably temporarily disable the front airbags—please point me to some instructions if that’s possible.

 

I used to rip the back seats out of my 2012 all the time. If I had a place to store them I would have them out all the time

 

Finished off the platform for Rocco today. Just made the 60 side for now. He loves it! Jumped right up there when he saw it. Life is good. Glued and screwed the legs, also installed some small metal L brackets I had kicking around to reduce flexing.

 

I see everyone going to the floor so this is what I did. 1 x 12 x full width and 2 plastic crates. Wrapped the board with carpet and throw a blanket over the whole deal. I did get full coverage seat covers for the back so I keep all the functionality of the seats. Dog shelf is easy to bounce in and out if needed. I will probably get something to block the space between the front seats but pretty good to go as is.

 

Safe to assume that the "bench" needs to come out altogether (60 or 40 or whole length) if you wish to flip the seat back down.

 

For sure, it's pretty easy to put in / out. I plan to keep it in all the time (don't usually have a fourth passenger) - it's turned out to be a nice spot to put a stroller!
