Initially the rattle noise would only happen when the weather was cold, now it happens every morning. The sound is coming from the d/side front of engine, and after about 2-3 minutes it stops. Anybody have any Ideas. Thanks Veteran1

Very likely it's the timing chain tensioner. Its been discussed on here several times and I have heard it also on mine. It would happen when cold and come and go as it heated up but would be completely gone after it warmed up. I haven't heard mine in a few months after using hpl cleaner for 5k then filling up with hpl engine oil for another 5k. Prior to using that, I tried using 0w20 and 5w30 with no change to the noise. My tundra has 244k.

I've watched many videos dealing with this issue. In one particular video the guy cuts his tensioner to see why it failed. He came to the conclusion that it was probably just varnish causing it to stick. Many people have just changed theirs out, but it is a lot of work. I may have to change mine eventually also but for now, it is quiet.

One other thing, what is HPL and I forgot to mention that this pickup has 74,000 miles and does mileage have anything to do with this issue. Thanks Veteran1

I run Mobil1 but I don’t think brand matters much if you change it every 5k miles or six months.

HPL is highly regarded oil over on bobisoilguy site. Admittedly, the motor oil is very expensive but it did the trick for me. I would probably start with any 5w30 oil first. mobil1 is about the best off the shelf oil you can buy at Wally world or any other auto parts store. If that doesn't work, possibly try the hpl stuff.
