So I've got a 2007 SR5 Tundra with no steering wheel controls and I'm looking to upgrade my head unit. I've been reading a bunch of the threads revolving around head units but I thought I'd just ask for one that meets my needs and see if anyone replies.

I would like something with a screen (obviously) that either doesn't stick out too far or has a kit that goes around it to give it the factory look and still retains the factory climate controls. It needs to have apple carplay (wired and/or wireless doesn't matter), optional camera compatibility incase I want to add a backup/front facing camera later down the road, and to be able to handle upgraded speakers and a sub under the back seat since I plan on eventually upgrading the factory system. I also saw a thread where someone had information regarding the transmission temps, tire pressure, oil temps, etc. and I thought that'd be really cool to have as well but I can always buy a separate screen that mounts to my A pillar if that's asking too much.
I'm not too picky on price but if you really need a number anywhere under $800-$1000 would be preferred.

Any recommendations or insight on your aftermarket unit would be greatly appreciated!

plug in your truck and filter by the things you want and you’ll have some options. You can get the fit kits and wiring harness all as part of the package.

I’d recommend something with the maestro adapter so it interfaces with all the factory controls.

I had a kenwood unit in my Tacoma that would do both front and rear cameras plus connected to a kenwood dash cam. It would also interface with odb2 to pull all that info.

Wow thank you very much I'll look into that! You say "had" so does that mean you got rid of it because you didn't like it? Or just a coincidence?

Had the Tacoma. My dad has it now and I just drive my tundra. Tacoma still has that head unit in it.

I ordered a Sony through Crutchfield for my 2008. Wired CarPlay, I’m happy with it. Lots of options depending on your budget.

Install wasn’t too bad and their tech support is excellent.

I saved 4 or $500 buying Chinese head unit from eBay.
Display great, sound great. However, some things to consider:
    • Since new dash units are basically computers, memory is more important than watts. I get touch screen lag constantly. Super annoying. Also creates regular issues with bluetooth connection.
    • Reflectivity - they may look shiny and new, but make sure to get a unit with low glare - with sunglasses on, I can't see my display without moving my head to be near perpendicular with the screen. And fingerprints!
    • Steering wheel controls - mine don't work even after several conversations with the manufacturer in China.
    • Backup Camera Interface - my 2007 didn't have one, so I bought an aftermarket handle with integrated camera. It was only 30 bucks, but now I know why. Make sure wide angle is really WIDE angle or it will have the following issues:
      • Can't see bumper corners
      • Can't see tow hitch
      • Only see 5 or 6 feet behind the vehicle
      • Useless at night
Stick with Cutchfield or a local installer and a brand name.

Sorry to hear about the hard time you've had with yours. I'm most likely either going with Kenwood or Sony just haven't decided the exact model yet.

If you buy from Crutchfield they have an option to pay another $20+ and they'll wire it up to basically make it PnP.
