I see Toyota Nav systems still suck.

Drove up to Spokane today to get my new wheels and tires installed. 75 mile trip through rural farmland.

My 2019 4Runner Nav would always seem to suggest the worst and least efficient way to go anywhere.

I was hoping that the Tundra would be different. Nope.

Half way there, it took me to this road and said to follow it for 3 miles...

I had navigation on my 2014 Tacoma. I see Toyota has done nothing in the way of making it better. It would update constantly, without my consent and only provide a cartoon like depiction of where I was or wanted to go.

It was a dismal, and expensive failure. I was exceedingly not happy with it :rain:

Who supplies the nav systems for Toyota? On my wife's car, which isn't Toyota product, the nav is supplied by TomTom.
It's not great! It gets too dark in the night time mode. ALL roads and highways are identified by state, county, town route numbers not by street names. I never use route numbers on secondary roads.

Same here. I wish my onboard nav would default to routes over roads like this. Anything to get off the damn interstate!

I used mine as back-up to onX Offroad a few years ago when I was deep in forest service roads looking at remote campsites. I was really impressed with the network of forest service roads, including some of the minor cross roads. So the database is really good IMO and having the antenna on the roof provided outstanding signal.

However, if the brains don't know how to use the database then yes the routing will be horrible. I had my 2016 F150 try to route me through an empty lot covered in sticker bushes and that was the last time I used any native Nav system. If someone isn't updating the database with roads that are on a planning map but have never been built then it's a Garbage In; Garbage Out. This was in downtown Issaquah for reference if you know the left side of the state.

I'm running an iPhone but just dumped Apple Maps for the same stupidity and went back to Google Maps. Apple has never been serious about their product and it shows. Last Saturday I was North of Everett and asked for the "nearest urgent care". It directed me to a place in the Tri-cities. I despise Google, but you cannot beat their Map product for usability, accuracy and especially the ability to download maps/roads to use offline when there's no cell service.

I assume your new tires/wheels are what's posted in your Avatar. Nice choice!

Not on factory 20" rims and street tires. I was already 10 minutes behind schedule for my new wheels and tires appointment and I had had just washed and detailed the Tundra. I was not amused. I normally love exploring new trails and roads, but not in a new rig that is not properly equipped.

Besides, it was a tractor trail in a wheat field. Not exactly an exciting trail.

I did the latest firmware update to my head unit and now run Android Auto exclusively. It's a gazillion times better than the previous version... that rarely worked at all.

Lol. I do plenty of exploring the mountains. I'm just old and wise enough to know what the limitations of my equipment is.

A few years while driving into the north Georgia mountains I switched my Garmin from "fastest route" priority to "shortest distance." It took me down some shit that only a goat could easily get through. The adventure was on and I refused to turn around (had the motorbike on a trailer behind the Tundra) as Mrs. McGov. shouted at me ever louder. I finally got to a point of damn near no return and the lovely Mrs. announced "stop I have to pee right now." 15 seconds into her stream a CJ5 came screaming up. She pissed all over her feet racing back into the truck. That was the most fun I'd had in that area in a long time.

Android Auto with Google maps for me. I honestly don't understand why car companies even bother putting the effort into their own proprietary nav systems. They'll never beat google maps.

I'm not sure but Panasonic makes the radios that aren't JBL from what I have gathered. I don't know if some one different is responsible for the navigation. I would think that the maps are supplied by someone probably Tom Tom but the the radio is Panasonic and the maps are just software. I know that before I tossed that garbage in the trash that it couldn't find hardly any of the addresses I searched for and to make matters worse the sound system sucked.
