Looking at possibly getting a retrax pro xr cover for my truck. I have read some reviews of people saying it get frozen and cannot roll open sometimes in winter. Anyone out here have any experience? I did have a couple days this last winter that I was not able to open my tailgate because it froze to my current ultracover bed cover.

Also, any thoughts on the following brands vs retrax:

Truck Covers USA (do they still sell these, website doesnt seem to have an order page?)
    Gatortrax

    I had a Retrax on my 2005.
We don't get much snow so I never had a freezing problem.
I could see maybe a layer of ice freezing on top that would keep it from opening, kinda like your tailgate issue.

But I will say it could hold a lot of snow..

So are you wanting a cover you can open when its covered in snow and ice? If so, go Diamond back. Just about all the tri folds and retractable covers will have issues with the water freezing and then not allowing them to function without risk of damage. I'm not too far from @1lowlife and also had mine covered in ice and snow. I never tried to open it while in this state and once the ice and snow melted, it worked like normal.

Hey there my retrofit guru!

To answer your question I have a RetraxPro XR myself here in MT, and can confirm that you can not modulate it when frozen or snowed over. The slats build up material, and won't go into the barrel. The same issue exists with any sort of tri-fold cover as well. I tell people that if you live somewhere that has snow/ice buildup, and you know that you're going to need to open/close your cover a lot to get a soft roll-up. That way, in a pinch, you can just bend it out of the way and toss it into the bed. I don't find my cover to be an issue though personally. Might just be how I use the truck though, but I really like that I get to enjoy a dry bed year-round.

Comparing the Retrax and Gatortrax they're the same cover. They'll tell you that they aren't, and they have different warranties... But they're all under the RealTruck umbrella. It's all the same stuff with different branding. They used to be different, but once the companies got absorbed the differences disappeared.

I can help you out across the board with sourcing covers too over here at Hotshot Offroad :D

Great info, thanks all! I think the water tightness of the retrax is what I'm after. Good info on the gatertrax as well @memario1214 ! I will definitely hit you up if I go that route. Got a pink slip from work this past week, so cover may be on hold until get a new job

Bummer about the unplanned life curveball @yosh2000 - best of luck moving forward

But yes, as previously mentioned, retractable covers are prone to freezing issues. I didn’t really have issues when snow stacked up on it - just brush it off and use as needed. My issues came with post car washes. Go in, rinse/wash the salt off when it’s 0-20°F normally no big deal. With the retractable cover, 5 minutes later it was stuck. My truck stays under a carport but not in our garage. If you can garage it where your garage gets above freezing you’ll be fine.

    with regards to brands:
I had a truck covers usa model. It was great and is advertised to have the smallest canister in the market which is helpful/nice with our CM beds. Mine happened to be on a DC but it did have a small canister as well. 99% waterproof. Keep your items that you don’t want wet out of the corners and you’re good to go.

excellent info @PermaFrostTRD . out here in CO, it usually snows one day and is 50*F the next and I always brush it off, so sound like I should be alright.

does truck covers USA still mfg covers? i like the idea of the smallest canister, but seems like for and inch or two larger canister, retrax is a company that has a larger presense for warranty or issues?

Truck covers still makes them. Right down the street from my work. I drop in there and chat with them if I ever need a part for my cover. Never ask questions and almost always give the part free of charge. Can’t tell you how many free key blanks I’ve gotten from them

I don't have too many issues in the winter. Here it is 10*f and at least 18" of snow on the ground. Works like a champ.

I don't have room in garage at the moment, so will just have to try to park in sunny spots! Thanks!
