@gosolo when are you going to start making yours in gold???

    daily-knives-ak1-gold-damast-122511dam.jpg

Currently there isn't much info on this knife except they say the blade is "Gold Damascus" which is super helpful in knowing if this is a joke or a decent knife.

Maybe gold plated, but gold is too soft of a metal to be a full blade on its own.

There’s considerable effort in Pakistan, China, Taiwan and other places where labor is cheap, recycled junk metals are plentiful, and zero environmental concerns exist, to produce junk knives like these IMG_0121.jpg
The usual method is to use an etching template and then color the surface with a coating. Obviously it’s not pattern welded Damascus.

on the other hand, there are custom knife makers that are making true pattern welded Damascus that incorporate nickel, copper, titanium, stainless steel and other materials in the layers to create outstanding contrasts and colors.
These are some beautiful pieces but in some cases are not as strong.

in this blade, the outer 2 layers are 455 layer Damascus with another 2 layers of pure nickel sandwiched on each side of a core layer of high carbon steel.
The key to making this an effective blade is to make sure that the softer material doesn’t reach the edge

This looks like mokume gane rather than Damascus, essentially just Damascus with non irons. Rays please correct me if I’m wrong. Terrible for a blade, great for accents! I’ve got a cleaver otw with mokume I believe they are using brass copper and nickel. It’s tricky because the low melting points. You can do something pretty similar with a stack of quarters

I don’t believe it’s mokume at all. Just a cheap imitation with no layers. If I had the name of the seller I’d be happy to research the details. My guess is that it’s cheap carbon steel, like the stuff used for grade 40 rebar. Perhaps drop forged or maybe stamped. Then a stencil attached to get a pattern, when submerged in an acid. After that, the stencil could be removed and the color applied.

I was trying to get a visual representation of the pattern in the wood grain with the design embossed in the sheath. I toned down the blue color with the addition of about 40% black. Definitely didn’t want the 2 blues to match.

Decided to pickup the Boker plus strike to go along with my mini and stubby.

    IMG_1362.jpg IMG_1363.jpg

I think this one is the best quality. The safety has a nice click when engaging it, seems a little snappier than the mini but not quite as much as stubby.

Honestly if I would’ve picked this one up before my benchmade claymore I may have not gotten the claymore, b/c for $70, roughly $200 cheaper than the claymore, I think it’s a solid buy! Although the claymore is definitely built better since it’s sharper and the blade seems of higher quality

    IMG_1365.jpg

Size wise I like the Boker mini strike the best.

I feel like the plus and claymore are a little big for my shorts pockets at times. Now I’ve discovered they make a claymore mini so thinking I may end up with one of those in the future as well!

I don’t have a spectacular knife collection, but you gotta start somewhere :D

Oh yea and here’s a pic of a little something the wife threw in the bag of Father’s Day stuff

A leo friend, local sheriff deputy, wants me to make one of these from Damascus IMG_0168.jpga bit of a challenge. I told him that without the molded scabbard it wouldn’t be possible, so he gave me the whole thing.
