Hey guys, I have a 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road and I'm seriously considering trading it for a 2017 Tundra Crewmax TRD Off Road. I've been scrolling through the forum pages and haven't seen nearly the kind of complaints that you see on Tacomaworld about the third gen Tacos. I've had a bunch of transmission issues with mine and I'm very frustrated with it. Outside of the larger size and decrease in fuel economy, is there anything that I should look out for before pulling the trigger with the Tundra?

I came from a '10 Taco SR5 4x4 that I put 120k + miles on, I didn't have any issues with my Taco but have had one with my '15 Tundie. The air fuel mixture messed up but was covered under a TSB. My MPG is around 17 with 75% being on the highway while my Taco was around 20 but when you look at the comfort for me and my wife I think it's a wash. I would never go back to a Taco and will look at Tundies when I'm ready to get a new one but it's only got 75k on it now.

I just went from a 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road to a Tundra. I've owned 4 Tacomas and 4 Tundra's. The obvious immediate negative differences will be; a loss of roughly 4-5 mpg, a little more difficult to park, not as capable Off Road, a little lower resale value, no electrical outlet in the bed. The positives would include; more power that is readily available without using wide open throttle, more comfort (the seats are better, not as cramped and sit higher, adjustable),tow more, bigger bed, safer in a crash. Like you, I despised that Acheson cycle engine and transmission combo. The damn thing was always bogging down on the hills under all situations but wide open throttle.

Welcome from SoCal! Happy hunting for a Tundra. When I was doing research before I bought mine back in November, guys were complaining about the factory brake controller. Since I hardly do any towing it didn't affect me much and there are after market brands that you can get. I haven't had any problems.

    Welcome!
I came from a second gen Tacoma and I love my Tundra. The transmission and engine in the Tundra work great together. I don't feel the shifts at all.

As others have said gas mileage isn't as good and it's a larger truck so hard to maneuver. Other than that no complaints.

Edit: actually I've had some issues with entune, but I'm gonna get that addressed when I take it in for service.

Do it and don't look back. I traded my 2010 Tacoma DC (124k miles, no real problems)for a '16 crew max trd pro 2 months ago. I legit had tears in my eyes walking away from the taco, it was such a good truck with some many memories attached.

Fast forward to today, zero regrets and the only thought is comparing how much better the Tundra is. The extra power is awesome, and if you have kids or carry a bunch of work crap around with you, the extra space is incredible.

My taco seemed to get 16.5mpg no matter how I drove it. The Tundra will do 17 on the highway and 14 around town, with me driving it like I stole it pretty much all the time.

Listen to everyone above and make the change.

Back in 2015 when I bought my Tacoma I should have drove the Tundra to. I would have never bought the Tacoma. The Tacoma was a good truck but the Tundra hands down a winner. I'm a happy camper with my Tundra.

I came from a 2006 Tacoma to a 2016 Tundra Crew Cab Platinum 4X4. The only down side as everyone mentions is the MPG, but the reality is I only get 2 - 3 MPG less with the Tundra then my Tacoma. Part of that is due to the lift and 34" tires. If gas mileage isn't an issue for you, the only other issue I have is the size and parking. There are some places I don't go in Atlanta just due to the hassle of parking. Even some parking garages are too low 6'8" is about the lowest I can go. Other than that, everything else about the Tundra is better. Nicer and larger interior, more powerful engine, better ride, etc. I don't think I could ever go back to a Tacoma after having my Tundra for a year. The Tacoma has it's place and does some things better due to its size, but the Tundra is just a nicer truck to drive. The current Tundras are mostly bullet proof. The drive train is a little older in tech (thus the MPG), but it is proven to last into the hundreds of thousands of miles without an issue or complaint.

On a side note, get a Tundra with the 38 gallon fuel tank. Much nicer to only have to fill up every 400 to 500 miles instead of every 250 to 290 miles like in my Tacoma.

Came from a Taco also. I had great memories with it but the tundra blows it out the water. The horse power is on a whole other level (grown man engine :D). The interior room is insane. It can tow a space shuttle, the man card is a must have and let's not forget the panties dropping everywhere you drive

100% will not regret switching to the dark side:devil:

I have had two Toyota pickups (pre Tacoma), 4 Tacoma's (2nd gen), and waited too long to drive a Tundra. However the minute I got in one I knew I would have one. I prefer the 6.5 bed of the double cab but like many here would love a 6.5 bed CM should it ever become a reality. I put a lot of miles on my Tundra for work and have no complaints. The small difference I see in gad mileage is well worth the trade off.
