Should I upgrade my 1794 from 2018 to 2023?

Agreed, flat out insulting other peoples trucks in regards to highly subjective topics is not a good way to achieve a respectful conversation and just puts everyone on defense.

 

I enjoy my 23 1794. I didnt go for the hybrid or anything else for that matter. What I do like is opening the panaramic roof, back window down and drivers window down. When hitting the gas, turbos whistle a bit and this thing hauls. I dont mind the jbl stereo syncd up to my apple music. Sounds good to me.

 

Let’s not get crazy here, the 5.7 is not a slug, it’s a great motor

I wanted them to punch it out to a 6.2 iforce. But now that I have this boost is fun and this thing does have a lot of torque

 

Perhaps it was a fluke.. but I test drove one shifting was oddly timed and harsh, then it went into limp mode for no reason. It had 39 miles on it at the time. The dealer had to come pick me up and flatbed it back.. That was enough to push me far away until these have a few years on them and get the bugs worked out. The dealer really had the gall to ask " Well how was it before it shut down, am I interested in putting a deposit down" LOL.. I am currently looking for another low mileage 5.7 just to have sit in the garage and run occasionally as a spare for whenever mine dies.

 

There is a broker in PA giving $6500 off MSRP on the tundra. He’s leasing the SR for around $350 the SR5 4x4 CM for about $517. This can’t last forever and the market is already shifting. The Big 3 are already offering big incentives and interest rates. Toyota is doing some good deals but not like before, not yet at-least. Matter of fact I can no longer get those great offers from Carvana, Carmax, etc. on my truck like I was able to before.

And 401 vs 406 is not impressive. It does come in at a lower rpm. And the 5.7 has more HP 381 vs 358.

Well I am on my 4th tundra with the 5.7. I have also driven both the SR and SR5 3rd gen platforms. It doesn’t take 1 million miles to gauge the performance of a car. You can drive them back to back for a few miles and know right away. You’re saying it like you’re driving a GTR to a Corolla. In normal day driving it’s not that big a deal. If you WOT from every light then yes since the TQ come in at a lower range. But 401 vs 406 TQ is not that huge.

 

I do really appreciate the laugh this morning. But you are 1000% correct. The 5.7 is the world biggest POS and the 3.4 is the worlds fastest. You want a cookie now? You’re too sensitive to a material thing. It’s a truck. Life’s too short to worry about what people say about a truck. Enjoy truck.

 

I don’t think the 5.7 even in stock form is a slug. It sometimes feels that way on light throttle due to them neutering the throttle mapping on 14+ trucks. 07-13 everyone complained was too touchy so they dialed it back, arguably too much. At WOT it’s clearly not a slug. Get a pedal commander, custom tune, or similar or even press tow/haul and it addresses that. Mine is definitely not a slug with 600+ crank hp and torque, it makes more power at the wheels than yours makes at the crank. It will run that peak torque from 2500rpm to redline. My 6500lb behemoth on 65lb tires catapults to 60 in 4.5s verified via dragy. And you can’t say it’s not cost effective, I’m 42k all in on this thing with the ultimate blower on the market and it’s been paid in full for a while now.

It’s a truck enthusiast site. It’s to talk about the good and bad. But clearly you and others are butt hurt fan boys that can’t take negative feed back. You can say all the crap you want about the previous gen, there are plenty of other forums that shit on the tundra in genera. You think that for a second I care? You obviously do. Well we can’t control what everyone is going to say on a public forum. We can only control what we say. I’d say your post 117 took the pot and shook the crap out of it relatively quickly and it seemed pretty unprovoked in the moment from where I’m sitting. Just a random lash out. This must be one of those “rules for thee, but not for me” scenarios? The living rent free thing appears to be going both ways.

 

I've put only a combined 138k miles on 2 - 5.7 Tundras. While I agree my new SR5 zips, I would consider it blowing the 5.7 out of the water. The power deliver comes in earlier. I think that gives a false impression of SO MUCH MORE POWA. LoL The SR has only 4 more ft.lbs. of torque and less HP. Out of the hole the 3rd gen would leave quicker. But a punch at midrange would tell a different story. There are times when I floor it when getting on the interstate and feel it should have accelerated quicker. I guess that's the nature of a turbo engine. Also the newer Tundras are lighter and have more gears, both of which improves acceleration. Anyway I love my 22, and so far the only thing I miss on my 5.7 is the better throttle control.

Eurodriver, was you not the one who had a 4.6 Tundra trying to decide if you should get a new gen? I'm not trying to start any beef, and probably thinking of someone else. I think it was a red truck.

I tell ya a truck that surprised me. Years ago I had to drive a brand new 2016 2.7 Ecoboost. It felt like a rocket compared to what I was used to. Popped the hood thinking it was their 3.5 but seen it was not.

What would of been great is if Toyota could of kept the torque at 1600rpms like the LS500. Have to give and take I suppose.

Why? I was just about to go and praise you for the high mileage. Maybe someday my 5.7 will get there, sitting on 30k right now. Don’t want to dive it to much or hard in fear that it might blow up.

It's great that it works for you, but the Gen 1 and 2/2.5 are not green with envy..
If I HAD to buy a truck today, it would be 2020 or 2021 Tundra.

It was a temptation at the time only because I could make $6000 on my truck as a trade in after 4 years ownership.

so my opinion today after 1 1/2 years.
The longer you wait the better position you will be in.
With rates having gone up and the US FED either holding rates or raising in two hours;
People are going to be hanging onto more vehicles from leases and financing.
Used vehicle shortage will continue.
I don't think the value of your truck will drop much in the next 6 months anyway.
As more time goes by, even more info will be available on 3rd Gens reliability, and there will be more on lots which means a lower price still in future.
If you value truck utility as you say, you do need to check it out in person to see which areas have changed.

I already have a F""k me I could die tomorrow car. Has never left me without a smile ear to ear when I get out of it. Rear engine, air cooled. No sound or feel like it. Visceral

My truck is for purpose and utility buddy. Sure it does make me feel all cozy inside as I drive loaded down...up and down hills listening to that V8 burble. I'm amazed a 350 engine can give me 18 mpg. And I sometimes still get a kick at watching other pickup owners wives in the passenger seat behind me, point at the open back window stopped at a light. But the final few miles where I go is tight trails driving and remote. I need assurances with my truck. AAA/CAA not coming in there to help. I don't need any drama here.

Everyone buying the new Tundra is expecting possible drama, at least those on this forum - 8^0, and hoping it doesn't happen.

 

I traded in my 2014 1794 4wd for a 2023 1794 4wd. I don't regret it but I do miss having a "paid for" truck, but such is life. My new truck is much faster and better mpg. I'm happy.

 

This really sums up the advantages of the 2nd gen to me. Zero drama & excellent maneuverability and ground clearance with everything tucked high and tight underneath. And it can tow 8k absolutely fine.

Still, I appreciate the growing data set of higher mileage 3rd gens. Especially Euro putting hard miles on his. I'm not in the market, but I'm definitely paying attention.

Always funny to me when there are a couple fanboys in a thread who just can't let anything go........OP asked for real world opinions on the potential swap to a third gen. Many gave the requested respectful and insightful opinions......and a couple 3rd gen owners get butt hurt and start spouting off. Bottom line is we are all Tundra enthusiasts. Drive your truck and be happy..........despite the generation.
