    That sucks...

I was on a dog buying trip in Indiana (ironically it was one of the times I saw fire flys while drinking beer on the hotel's upper deck at night); sorry, anyhow, we're on our 2nd to last day there and getting ready to head to the vet w/2 of them for screening and papers to fly home with. One dog decides he's had enough of being manipulated by people he doesn't know.... Dudes being totally chill coming out of the crate, but as soon as I go to put a leash on him, he nails me in the left hand; fortunately, he came off pretty quick... Anyhow, he ended biting head-on into the webbing of my left hand and severed a couple of good bleeders. The vet is unable to stop the bleeding, so we wrap it up quickly and haul ass to the closest hospital which is about 45 minutes away.

So, we're heading to a small hospital in a tiny ass town, and I"m thinking... This is not going to go well

Get to the hospital and start to check in. Receptionist asks why I'm there. I unwrap my hand, she says, 'oh shit you need to follow me'... (that was my quickest ER check-in ever)... I end up seeing the Dr within about 5 minutes and he says we're going to do a conscious sedation (whatever the hell that meant); so I remember feeling a bit loopy, but then I'm watching them debride the wound on top of my hand, and he then says, 'how you feeling, I'm going to have to cut out some of this dead tissue'... At that point I was good and really felt nothing. They get to a point where they're finishing up and need to loosely close the wounds so they can drain... Several loose sutures on the top to tie the skin back into place (somewhat), and then they flip my hand over...

Dr. says, 'we're going to need to do a few loose stitches on the palm area as well'... First one goes in and i must have reacted, as Dr. says, 'Did you feel that'?? Fuck yeah I felt it... Dr says, 'Well you shouldn't'. I tell him, 'Uhhhh, I did'. He asks do you want me to give you more local, so I ask how many more stitches are we taking??? He says 2 more. I tell him to just get them done. Those other 2 were not pleasant either. Mind you the Dr. was super polite and interactive about trying to mitigate my discomfort during the process (this surprised me based on past ER experiences).... Dr. then tells me I'll probably end up w/some nerve damage and to see a hand specialist when I get back to Vegas....

Get home, visit specialist, and they say everything looks good and that the ER Dr. did a great job with what he had to work with. I ended up writing a letter to that hospital and to the Dr. to thank them for how I was treated and for the work they did. I guess sometimes it pays off to not be in a major city or major facility when it come to quality of care.

Well, that ended up being a novel :sorry:

You know there are dogs probably within 5 - 10 minutes from you, right?

    joking aside, that’s fucking nuts.

When my daughter was about 4 she cut her head while camping. Blood everywhere.
It was a 25 minute drive to the hard surface road and another 30 to a small hospital, Stonewall Jackson Memorial. I thought the same as you. Turned out it was close to VMI and they were experts in head wounds from weekend nights. They were super nice and even shampooed the blood out of her platinum blond hair.

Know the feeling. I had hand surgery one time from almost cutting my thumb off and still have a few numb spots on my thumb. It’s weird though how your body adjust and you don’t really notice it anymore.

That’s fucking wicked. From the pic looks like the thumb should have been taken off.

Sure did! I had to go to PT to get there but I’ve got 95% of the motion back and don’t realize anything difference on strength really.

Yeah I got pretty lucky. I learned to keep both hands on the skill saw the hard way.

A good PT person is worth their weight. My buddy was told by his doc that he would be lucky if he regained 75% of the range in his pinky (he's missing half a joint). He's got almost all the range back. His PT is good, and he's stubborn.

Glad they took good care of her. Head wounds are always way bloody and usually appear worse than they are. I couldn't imagine having a daughter that age and seeing her bleeding like that :(...

Indiana wasn't the breeder or anything, just the vendor we used to import... Way cheaper to pay them to operate as the middle man than it was to fly a few dudes to Europe to buy dogs

Yeah, that's definitely a good one... for me end of the thumb manipulation, dexterity and feeling isn't completely gone, but it's like my brain isn't communicating what I'm wanting it to do properly (at times).

This is weird though, the webbing area of my left hand (where all the dead tissue was removed) doesn't produce any moisture; so, I'm constantly putting lotion and hand creme in that area to keep it from cracking :notsure:

Were not trying to mitigate your experience; just giving you something else to think about for a bit...

I cut my index finger to the bone with a box cutter and instantly couldn't move it, knew I was fucked. They said I completely severed the tendon and had to do surgery. They made an incision in my finger, and in the middle of my palm to pull the tendons together to fuse them. Although I did rehab, I didn't do it long enough to get complete movement of my finger, my fault. :( Don't be like me.

A few... Definitely more than 2
My dad just did this to his thumb... right at the base of his fingernail and he only had about 1/4" of flesh on the inside of the joint holding the tip of his thumb on. His story however is nowhere near as cool. He was doing epic battle with a folding hide-a-bed couch and left his thumb in the hinge. Definitely not pretty or fun, time will tell how much of his range of motion and feeling he gets back.

The same buddy that ran his hand through the tablesaw almost lost a fingertip in a wood chipper when it slammed a log he was chipping down on his fingers. He also has a cool scare on his side from tripping over a branch that kicked up while felling a tree and falling on his running chainsaw.

My advice..don't let your kids go into state park maintenance. It's dangerous.

    Nasty injury!
I've got a box cutter story. I was a young and dumb electrician apprentice. Breaking down cardboard boxes and cutting towards myself, I buried a full blade a few inches above my knee. o_O
Wrapped it up and went back to work, until I got light headed and I noticed my sock was soaked with blood. Not my best move!

Her sister took it worse than we did. She was sitting in the back seat holding the towel. All was good in the end.

This is the "always cut away from yourself" best advice you can give. When I cut my finger that bad, I had that great combination of feeling like passing out, and puking all at the same time. :help: :)

Nothing this morning? Or is everyone trying to not follow all the gory bloody finger pics?

My brain is toast. Had a very long week and I finally cleared a bunch of projects so I’m struggling to pay attention today. Got a long 170 mile trip this afternoon with the trailer in tow thru some of the worst traffic in the state. Just want to get that started but gotta wait for school to get out.

Nothing exciting here. Gym this morning as usual, and working. Still car hunting for the new driver in the fam.

Crazy thunder and lighting last night. Dogs were not a fan of it. Our bigger dog becomes a baby lol
