I'm building an earth sheltered home on my property in the Rocky Mountains SW of Denver, CO.

Sadly my neighbors are getting me thrown off my property over an easement dispute which makes me homeless.

I do have my 2006 Tundra and will be living in that while I complete my earth home build.

Does anyone here use a camper top on their Tundras?

Will this year of Tundra carry a camper top?

    Thanks!

IMO, you'll be happier in a camper trailer, then a camper top for the truck itself and get a lot more living space for your buck, and you can leave it on your worksite, while using the truck itself for supply runs, etc.

Good luck on your earth sheltered home. I built a house myself using straw bale, and right now, I'm building a camper trailer for my truck,

    Just a thought.....IMG_6625.jpg

I'd have an enclosed trailer on site for tools and material storage and remove the wheels/tires, a utility trailer to haul material in fewer trips to save on time in order to get the house built vs driving around frequently, Then lastly a trailer for living out of. Towards the end of the project I would then sell all of the trailers and get the money back to apply it to interior finish. If you buy right and don't tear shit up, you can even profit by doing this. It helps to sell during tax refund season. Good luck!

I actually bought a new Jayco 29' 264 BHW off road travel trailer in 2018 and stored it for a year. I moved onto my property in 2019. The county that I'm in, Jefferson County CO, required that I get a permit for living in the RV temporarily while doing a barn remodel. The County ended up turning down the remodel unless I brought the barn up to current agricultural standards. The cost of the upgrade was $40 to $60K which was more than I could afford so I went to my primary build which is the earth sheltered home.

As part of my easement lawsuit which I'm into for $20K already my opponents have been bombarding me with nuisance complaints one of which was my Temporary Living in an RV. They've made that one stick so I'm having to remove the RV which makes me homeless.

I will probably sell the TT. It only has about 100 road miles on it but I've been living in it since late 2019. I know TT values are up.

Back to my original question. Is the 2006 Tundra capable of hauling a camper insert?

That would work well over the summer here in the Rockies but I will living in my truck over the winter. Here the temps get into the double digit negatives so a more weather worthy set up is what I'm after. Therefore a camper insert is the way to go for me.

    Nice setup, though!

I believe there's one or two slide-ins a few pages deep in the thread I linked; nevertheless lots of good ideas in that thread even if they don't apply directly to your build.

The T100, which I bought new in 1996, is my hauling truck for materials. I just put a new to me engine in it last year. It's got about 275 miles on the clock.

That's a temp service panel that I put in as I had that meterbase laying around. I just shunted across the meter stabs.

Looks like a cool spot you're putting together!
The tundra can haul a truck camper. You'll likely have some sag in the back, so the truck could benefit from new springs or air bags. The payload is around 1500 lbs, so you'd be looking for the lightest units. There is a Kimbo on craigslist.
Is the county going to have a different opinion on you living there in a truck vs a trailer or are you planning on camping somewhere else?

Damn. I don't think any trailer is going to shelter you well down to -10F or below. You need to keep yourself warm and any drinkable water so it doesn't freeze. You'd be better off renting a room in boarding house.

Can you legally live in a tent, on your own land? 4-season insulated tent is cheaper and more practical than a truck bed camper.

Sell the TT --> Make the necessary updates to the barn with that $$.
Then use the barn as a barn/loft/shop once earthen-wall home is done.

Yes, a slide-in camper will work on these trucks. A couple of folks here have them on 1st Gen Tundras. Can't speak to the T100 though.

Don't know how much property you own out in the woods and how people next door know your business, but sometimes you have to do what you got to do. Put up No Transgressing signs on all 4 corners of property with some or one in between them. Make an office/room inside the barn w/o running electric to the office/room or barn if w/o electricity already Make that office with wooden floors sandwiching 3" or 4" Styrofoam boards. Double up on Styrofoam boards if necessary/cheaper to properly insulate, do same with walls and roof of indoor office. Make your generator run quiet. Put it in a cubicle/large box of it's own outside with same sandwiched thick insulation. Stick and seal the generator exhaust in tubing to a car muffler out side of box and pot a hole in it with length of A/C flex pipe for sufficient air intake. Fool with it till you make that generator quite. Lock the barn from inside at night and go to sleep in the closed office that has a space heater in it. Sleeping in double digits below ain't right.

Can you not always be working on your site whenever the Sheriff or whoever comes around and claims your living there? I'd just have a set of plans out and a driveway alarm to wake me. Yes sir, just studying plans here sir. They can't stop you from having a meal while working either. I've dealt with bad neighbors more than once and there are ways to get rid of problems. Sometimes it takes some time and serious efforts, but it's possible for sure.

Jefferson County, CO has made very restrictive regulations regarding living on your own property without a C.O., or occupancy permit. Of course that's just for law abiding citizens.

They've drilled down to what a property owner can or can't do with a barn on their own parcels. Per Jeffco a barn is only for agricultural purpose so horses and cows but no storage for vehicles or travel trailers. No living spaces without being heavily permitted (spend money) by the County.

Here the Zoning and Planning Department can assess fines of up to $1000/day for violations.
