Which death trap spring compressor?

    So, while attempting to assemble my Dobinson coil overs today, my el-cheapo spring compressor died. Luckily it wasn't a spectacular ignominious death, but the tabs on both compressors legs broke simultaneously (well, one broke, transferred the load to the other, which then broke...). I've probably assembled or disassembled a dozen sets of coilovers or struts so I got my monies worth and escaped unscathed...

    So, since I feel like chancing things a little less and I can't find a decent used Branic or the like, I see these two. Which would you choose? I'm inclined to go with the SPC Universal compressor (safe working load of 2600 lbs with safety factor of 3) over the [Whatever Brand] 3 Ton Hydraulic unit. But the hydraulic unit looks like it would be easier and simpler - less time dealing with a compressed spring increases safety factor, but not if it's going to explode much easier.

    Not enough....
    I have the SPC unit, and while it's an extremely nice unit, the Dobinsons coils are too close together once assembled to get the tool back out. That hydraulic press style might work. I ended up assembling them with a proper wall mounted spring compressor at a real mechanics shop (it's my friend's shop where installed the lift after hours).     As much as I love doing all my own work, and if I hadn't had access to a shop, I would have just paid to have them pre-assembled had I know my SPC compressor wouldn't work.

    Thanks. That’s what I was worried about; I borrowed a Branick clamshell compressor from and friend and it had the same issue. So, luckily, I found a Toyota gear head suspension shop down the road with the right setup. I just dropped them off for assembly. I, too, prefer to do my own work but sometimes you just don’t have the right tools.

    I have one similar to the bottom one. I used it quite a bit when I was tinkering with the King front coilovers. Swapping 600 lb coils to 500 lb coils on my 2007 RCSB. This truck was so light that 600lb springs jacked up the front really high. And with low preload it didn't ride nice. This was 2016 or 17. I haven't checked the hydraulic jack. Hopefully the seals are still good. In addition to that safety chain, I also wrapped the coil and shock with heavy duty webbing or strap just in case those fork break, the whole assembly won't fly off.
