I went to an independent shop per my friend’s recommendation. The mechanic is an Asian car specialist (works mainly on Toyotas, Hondas, and Lexus) former master tech at a Toyota dealership from afar. He fixed the coolant hose and clamp that wasn’t placed on properly by the dealer after they did the water pump. He also changed my oil and he mentioned that it appeared they didn’t quite put enough oil in my engine on my last change.

I watched him changed the oil and fix the other stuff. He used Mobil 1 and Toyota oil filter. It took 8.5 quarts for it to read at full, so almost 9 1 quart bottles. He started with 7 quarts and checked level, it wasn’t there yet so he added .5 quarts and it was barely near the middle dot. It took another bottle. This makes me wonder if the dealership has been putting in the proper amount when they change my oil. The dealership would normally have 8 bottles and put in 7.4 or 7.5 quarts as it calls for.

Regardless who or when the oil was last changed, it's a good habit to check the dipstick every couple weeks. Spending the 30 seconds to inspect it while getting gas can save a lot of headache.

At least your truck survived but moving forward like someone mention, please make sure you check your oil level regularly.

I check my oil weekly, happily it hasn't used any.

Not that it uses oil or anything. The dealership in my area is just really bad. Has a pretty bad reputation but yet still getting a lot of business.

I get that some dealers can be crappy. Always best to check behind these days
