    Hi all,
So, just picked up a 2016, which has the factory trailer brake controller. I still have the Prodigy P3 I used in my other vehicles, which I was very happy with.

So, should I just stick with the factory controller? Is it any good? I’m going to be towing a 24’ travel trailer, ~6000 lbs, so… I’d like to know it’s up to the task.

It looks like there’s some mounts to replace the stock controller, so I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth the hassle.

    Thanks,
    Dirk

I’ve had a P-3 in my previous rigs, but still use my OEM controller in my 2018 CM. Seems like a lot of folks have had trouble with the OEM unit, but mine has been flawless so far.
I own three different trailer with electric brakes, and all of them work great with the OEM.
That said, the P-3 is nicer to use. I understand that it’s easier to retrofit into an older truck, but the newer models throw a fit because the OEM is integrated into the DIC. Because of this, I have not changed mine.

It doesn’t hurt to try the factory one and see how it works for you. I wasn’t satisfied with the one in my 2016 and went with the P-3 and found it much better for me. Someone makes a plate to install it where the factory one goes in the dash.

    Not enough....
I also have a 2016 and swapped it out for the P3. I was having issues with the factory one and couldn't get it resolved. The P3 has been much nicer to use and has far more options and adjustability which I find very useful when towing many different types of trailers.

Thanks everyone. Good to know about the plate for the P3 - that would make the swap a lot easier. I guess I'll try the factory one & see first, before I buy more parts. :)

If you decide to go the P3 route (I had one in my Tacoma and loved it) make sure you get the wire harness adapter that has an extra ground wire that you need to ground to the vehicle. Tundra after 2015 used a much smaller gauge wire for ground than the P3 requires.

I have a P3 for my Silverado. Now that I'm switching to Tundra, I'm not able to find the adapter for the 2023 model. Tekonsha apparently hasn't made one yet. Anyone find it?

For those having “issues” with the factory: what were they?
