Had the opportunity to find some 89 octane for the same price as regular elsewhere and filled up with <1/8 tank 87. Drove 24 miles mixed city/hwy, redlining in 1st when possible…

Stopped at a shell and only needed 1.1 gal. Granted efficiency should be better with a full tank, but this seems better than on 87 with increased throttle response (though I did run some injector cleaner two tanks ago).

anyone running premium while naturally aspirated in a non-vvti? I can’t imagine any gains would be had to offset the expense. One would assume the vvti was more efficient, but what is the experience here?

Octane of gas barely if at all increases mpg for any vehicle. Want better mpg? Tonneau cover and 12port injectors for the tundra are the best from what I hear

Mythbusters quashed the 'bed wind resistance' myth by removing the tailgate entirely and driving with it. I know tonneau manuf'ers like to claim improved fuel efficiency via less drag, but based on Mythbusters' tests, it looks bogus.

They tested it in Episode 43.

Then re-tested with other methods in Episode 64.

I suspect the 12-holed injectors thing is a myth too. So far no evidence on that one.

Im sure most people run 87 unless boost is involved or they prefer ethanol free. Is vvti supposed to help with the mileage as well or just power though?

Just to clarify (you probably know, but in case anyone misunderstands your post), ethanol can be added as an oxygenate to regular (87), mid-grade, or premium gasolines. If you want ethanol-free gasolines, you need to look for signs that say ethanol-free.

You can wash ethanol out of fuel, but gimme the cheap gas for the truck, cause the buell only takes premium.

i average about 17mpg stock height, stock tires.

gas is 2.90 here, mid grade is 3.14, i'd be 8% (or whatever) more pissed at people effing up my momentum if i were paying 8% extra for my gas.

Been a while since I watched it... but wasn't the myth better mileage with tailgate down? And it proved the opposite.

Better with it up and/or with a tonneau.

Stock '02 SR5 Access Cab V8 Auto 2WD with 265 70R16 Tires inflated to 34 psi cold. ARE Hard Tonneau. Exxon/Mobil 87 Octane Fuel.

My usual observations over a 250-mile trip on Scangauge II (Interstate Driving):

20.9 mpg @ 70 mph. Fuel Flow about 4 gph

24 mpg @ 62 mph. Fuel Flow about 2.5 gph

Manual calculations based on distance traveled and fill-up quantities confirm this.

Correct. I probably could've worded more clearly.
