Yeah the new Tacoma despite not bringing as much non-hybrid power as the competition, is a much much much more impressive offering than the 3rd Gen Tundra.

Plus the 2.4L I4 Turbo T24A-FTS is not quite as complex as the V35A-FTS. It also has more main journals than the V6 to spread that cylinder pressure thrust load out on, and each piston and con rod have their own rod journal. So it gets more robust structure than the V6 and is tasked with making less power.

Please post the links. What I see points back to this site. A lot of what you "feel" could be people that don't own a current model Tundra going on and on about why they're happy they don't. The next thing you know, 8 failures seem like 800.
Data is the high card working QC and QA issues:
Right now, NHSTA has 22 complaints of Tundra engine failures. That could be everything from a bearing failure to an owner doing stupid shit. That's 22 across and estimated volume of 80,000 units. No recalls, no class action lawsuits. Nothing material I could find outside of what looks like less than 10 on this site. Don't like top down data, stop by your dealer. The dealer in Asheville has sold aprox 100 units. Service said they've never had to replace a motor.

Compare to the Turbo issue- It was identified almost immediately and remediation was put in place.
Or, compare to F150's- Google APIM, Telematics, Gateway, 10 Speed auto and just about everything else and you'll find wads of data and class action lawsuits. 10x the volume yes but good lord, 1000x the noise. When there is an endemic issue, it shows up in a hurry and spreads like wildfire. Just like the turbos. I don't see that with the engine failures.

Of course there could be long term issues with the motor. It's new. That said, there are 10,000's in service and I trust Toyota's pressure testing more than anyone else. They really don't have a history of producing crap motors.

Still, you pay your money and take your chances. I voted to take the chance.

Maybe a few in 2007 like 5 but We all know that 3.4tt has shown it has was less reliability than the proven 5.7. The 3.4tt has been out since 2017 and Lexus owners has the same problem main bearing issues. Lol I might be bias I have an 2008 it’s been rock solid for 15 years and counting.

Agreed..!! I’m really liking what I’m seeing with the ‘24 Tacoma. I won’t do a hybrid, but the non hybrid non SR turbo four looks interesting. And with an 8-spd auto. I’m going to see over the next couple years how much my ‘23 Tundra continues to grow on me, and how real world Tacoma testing goes.
I want to really love my Tundra.. it’s an impressive vehicle, I’m just not feeling the love…

I’d love to hear your explanation on why these few dozen engines ate a bearing while being brand new. Toyota engines have a reputation for being pretty much bullet proof. If you think this launch has lived up to the reputation there isn’t anything that can be said. Name another Toyota engine that had multiple mysterious catastrophic failures with 10k miles on the clock…

sure pulls like it does belong in a truck, at least in my early ownership experience, we’ll see when I get to tow with it

Put enough boost in and I’m sure it feels amazing - makes way more power than a 5.7. But looking at the mass and displacement of the two engines, they are not the same.

I guess I don’t care about the mass and displacement at this point , I like it and the 479 at 2,400 backed by a really nice 10-speed performs awesome. I wanted a 6.2 I force 10 speed but alas Toyota make this and the other trucks on the market weren’t nearly as nice.

so off to boost land we go, it moves very easily I can say

I do think this forum is a lot smaller sample size of 3rd gen owners than the Facebook pages. I see far more pop up on those pages, I’d say there is 1 every 2 weeks at least. I’ve seen more engine failures on the one page than I’ve ever seen on the other 4+ tundra groups I frequent that are comprised of mostly 1st-2.5 gen tundras made in the previous 20 years.

I wouldn’t be worried about it long term once they actually can confirm what is causing it anyway. Last I heard they don’t actually know, and it happens at all kinds of different mileage. I’ve also seen at least one 23, so don’t think it’s a bad batch of bearings from early on. Would be nice to hear that they’ve figured it out, I could see new sequoia being in my families future if they actually prove to be reliable.

that’s exactly what I got , it’s super nice so far , we’ll see what happens, dead nuts quiet and tight so far and build quality is good

Sorry op, didn’t mean to derail , good luck with your rig and push for yota to give you a extended warranty after they fix it , I’ll bow out now and leave the debate for the massive amount of 8-15 failures or whatever it is to others , shit happens and when it does , it sucks !

my 16 crapped out in my garge from a bad fuel pump , Toyota stood behind it and fixed it like they most always do so the sky isn’t falling just yet, hang in there

At 11000 miles, I'd be demanding satisfaction. That is unacceptable. Tearing into a brand new truck for something that major is crazy. They have to remove the entire cab to swap an engine in these.

This is certainly not good news and I sympathize with the OP. But we always seem to have about 300 posts here for every engine failure. So, it does get blown out of proportion a bit. Although if it happens to mine I may change my tune. ;-)

It is. The problem is, all the electrical connections must be reconnected correctly (all of them the first attempt) and the wiring must be situated in such a way that it is not rubbing on anything once they get everything back together. It certainly creates the potential for more problems down the road. These new trucks (mine included) are built like appliances, not serviceable equipment.

And you’re relying on a dude making $22/hr that’s never done it before to make it as good as the factory that builds them everyday.

While I applaud what you’re trying to do…all you’re gonna do here is trigger the new gen haters that only dip their toes into the 3rd Gen forum whenever they see a post or thread with the words “_______ Failure.”

Best to just let them do their thing and keep on moving.
