    I have a '23 Tundra CM SR5 I picked up in December '22. Now it's May 9th and still no 2nd FOB.

I was feeling bad for myself then I read this thread...

Despite whatever else has been said above about whether/not someone who buys a ~$60k truck should or could buy a second FOB I think it's pretty lame that Toyota would deliver this truck to consumers with only 1 FOB and not provide with some interim solution that is better than "call roadside assistance if you get locked out" or go buy another FOB at your own expense.

Does anyone else think that the very least Toyota could do in the meantime would be to make the "DIGITAL KEY" functionality available for all Tundra's delivered with only 1 FOB? With Digital Key available then at least you could use your smart phone as a fully functioning key to not only start+open but also drive/operate your truck just like Lexus, Tesla as well as some higher end trims of the Tundra I believe do with the RF/credit card and smart phone capability?

I'm 99% sure that it should be possible to program the software to enable DIGITAL KEY based on the hardware that is already installed in any truck that has the smart key/FOB as well as Remote Connect software??

For what it's worth this is my 4th Tundra in 20 years. Longtime and loyal Toyota owner...

So I can unlock my truck with my phone, I can start my truck with my phone, but I can’t drive it with it? I haven’t tried it yet. I’m guessing a key must be present?

correct - must have FOB to drive it UNLESS your truck has been enabled with the “digital key” system which is available on most Lexus and some higher end Toyota models.

I believe getting Digital Key functionality is a software upgrade (ie., not hardware) and I have asked Toyota to make it available to any Toyota/ Tundra owners who were only given one FOB.

Seems to be such an obvious fix for the issue BUT I highly doubt that it’s something Toyota will actually do (or even respond to the request for that matter…)

The Lexus NX for 2022-2023 has the same headunit as our tundra's and has digital key think more like Apple Pay is for have a second Credit card Digital key is for your fob. So it's there baked into the new headunit but Toyota needs to turn it on and in some of the materials for the Tundra gen 3 said that digital key function is baked in but will be enabled at a later date.

given the speed to fix the issue with music playing on the speakers while Apple CarPlay is making an announcement has been ongoing for the past eighteen months my guess is Digital Key will be enabled about three months after we get our 2nd fob some time in 2024.

im not bitter just furious that Toyota is pulling this crap while jacking up there prices, giving two keys to current buyers and the software issues that are well discussed are still not getting addressed. We have a 2021 RAV4 prime and the CarPlay functions correctly and we got two keys.

Toyota I expect excellent service the entire time of ownership.

That’s a lot of stress and strain over a digital key and fob situation

and new owners are not getting two yet either , it is what it is .

I just bought another one and moved on, not that big of an issue imo

Toyota has been fixing the issues rather well I think , my 2023 seems to have most of the early issues worked out so far

The two keys or one key is based on build date, if your was built pre March 2023 you got one key after you get two. As to buying another fob if they have enough stock to have fobs available to buy and there service departments are willing to program them that that's an issue in and of itself you have fobs to sell then you have the means to make your customers whole. No song and dance no campaign that keeps getting kicked back further and further down the road. Make your paying current loyal customers whole!!

However in place of the 2nd fob we the customers are owed turn on the digital key I bet you 1/2 of the owners that are short a fob were given digital key and a service credit to forgo the other key they would jump on it and the 2nd fob key campaign would solve itself.

At the end of the day it is what it is right? No one here can make Toyota move any quicker or handle this better but as a customer and a member of this forum I am allowed to have a sense of frustration and be pissed and disappointed.

Members saying it's no big deal and just buying another fob and telling us to get over it is almost as bad of a response and is a form of gaslighting in and of itself. And is more or less reinforcement Toyotas handling of said current issue.

In the past 30 months I have handed over to Toyota Motor Co. 100K so yea I would like this issue handled.

Also for what it's worth i'm thrilled with the truck, are there some minor quirks sure but what car doesn’t have them. Quite honestly after going off of the Toyota camp to Mini Cooper and Honda this is the first car in a long time for me that's not in the shop prior to its first tuneup at 5K.

Also heres a big part of the issue if Toyota would have sent out a letter to all buyers with a single fob and communication that the campaign would be announced say June of 2023 with the rollout concluded say February of 2024 that would be huge. Insted we get a sticker and a vague Letters will be coming in April, Err sorry May, Err sorry Early Summer, Err sorry late summer "trust us"

For those of you who bought a 60K plus truck and went im baller let me toss another 400.00 also knowing that toyota is saying that no credit will be given for buying another fob good for you, There are plenty of people who are not in said same position they might need the truck for work or a startup whatever the case.

That's fine and great, BUT there's no timeframe wanna say within 18 months of delivery fine great but there's no endpoint and once again communication from Toyota was "fobs will start being fulfilled April, Err March, Err May, Err early summer, Err late summer" they have been kicking this can down the road for five months now. Do you think your lender would let you withhold a month's payment? Stop defending the manufacturer and start demanding a resolution.

I got an official looking thing in the mail from "Toyota" yesterday and thought it might be the notice to come get my fob. But, no, it was just another one of those bogus aftermarket service plan warranty adverts pretending to look like official Toyota correspondence. Didn't fool me, however. Not my first rodeo, so to speak.

Floor mats have been something you have to watch for with every manufacturer for decades. It’s always one of the first things I look at. If that paper doesn’t say floor mats, they aren’t included. Learned that on a Chevy Tahoe in 1999. Any time I’ve caught it and pointed it out they’ve just grabbed some from another vehicle on the lot and given them to me.

I bought a spare from Toyota, total cost, $320. My wife and I travel alot and it's a security thing for me. Bottom line, this is unacceptable from Toyota.

toyota gave you notice that you would only get 1 fob and another later. if you accepted the condition why the complaint now? you could have refused and waited for a vehicle with 2 fobs. just cause your situation dictates you NEED a fob now instead of later doesnt mean its toyota's fault. the bare minimum is 1 fob is required to use the vehicle, 2 is a convenience.

but hey you do you :)

edit: i remember way back we use to get 3 keys, 2 mains and a valet. then it went to 2 mains and some brands went 1 main and 1 valet. and some higher ends now a days only give you 1

i dont see anyone not taking delivery cause of being told of getting only 1 key. if you dont like it dont buy the vehicle. you made the choice and agreed to the terms. :)

the terms said at a later date, not a specific date or time frame.

Impressively dumb take. I drove 9 hours to get my truck, and literally as they were handing me -what should have been- the keyS, they gave me a piece of paper saying I only get one and should have a 2nd within a month. I guess in that case I drive back home 9 hours knowing that Toyota will screw me over and wait the better part of a year to give me a fob?

If they are selling other vehicles, including new Tundra's, with a fob, they should make existing customers whole. This is shitty, and after giving Toyota $150,000 in the past two years, this kind of shithousery is giving me a "never again" feeling. Already warned a family member away from the brand, so that $300 fob has likely cost Toyota at least $10,000 in net profit.

More horrible logic. They can use this logic in 15 years too, "hey we said sometime in the future, maybe next decade". If this is how they deal with customers then expect to lose quite a few. Stop being a cuck for corporate misbehavior.

So spoke to the sales manager of my dealership today (after seeing this post). He said Toyota is going to begin distribution of second fobs “this summer”.

I was happy to get my truck and only one key in the mean time. It's better than my brand new truck, sitting, rotting getting infested with God knows what in a parking lot somewhere while Toyota waits on chips to become available to give me a second key. Toyota simply realized they can get two owners their trucks each with one key, rather than one truck with two keys.

After seeing all of the feeder lots filled with Fords, GM's and whoever else over these last couple of years, I think this is a smarter decision.

I bought my Tundra the beginning of February. Dealer never told me it came with only one key until all the papers where signed and the truck came back from being washed. And then only when I looked in the manuals folder and discovered that there was no additional key in it. I only found the sticker you refer to last week while washing the truck. it was in the door jamb below the VIN sticker and tire pressure sticker. Had I been told, it would have been part of the negotiation. I purchased a second Keyfob online. But wasn't able to program it myself with my bi-directional scan tool, even though it is capable. Toyota dealer wouldn't give me my key code needed to program the FOB. Even though I held a TS security clearance for 30 years, this code is above my paygrade. The manager saw how angered I was and offered to program the fob for half the usual cost. My point is I should have been made aware before purchase so the fob could have been part of the negotiation.

Get off it, did a bunch of people take delivery of a vehicle without it yes. For me I was told April, I'm now being told late Summer. It's a bad customer service period. Stop defending the company, and in regards to other manufactures Ford and GM people that I know that bought them with missing parts have been getting those parts added this year and they got a credit at time of delivery. Granted the dealers robbed them blind.
Gotta tell ya the fanboy factor in here is getting old fast. I love my Toyota's but not so much that I'm not going to call them out when they don't do right in any capacity nor should anyone else.

Also Toyota could solve this very easily by enabling Digital Key it's in the truck and just needs to be enabled by Toyota.

That is especially pathetic that they actually charged you to program the fob you bought. They should have done that for free or at least given you the code. The fact that they didn't says it all... they just wanted your $. Too bad the tool couldn't read the ECU and make it work. I have a couple of 2-way tools, including TS, that supposedly do key fobs, but I have never had to try that function.

Maybe true a year ago but there are plenty of fobs for sale at dealers so they could at least start sending existing owners the second ones by now.

I don't mind the idea of a parts department having parts available for sale. It's a lot better than wiping out all inventory so we can have a key in the drawer at the house. This way, if some poor soul gets robbed, or loses their keys some other way, they can go buy a key and use their truck.

Toyota did the same thing with the tacomas about a year ago, this is nothing new. They got all of those owners their keys in due time.

Let's be honest, there is no right or wrong answer to this problem. Hopefully someday, things will be back to normal and we can forget about all of this shortage crap.

Depends on your personal definition of "due time". And we really have no way to understand the big picture here. What is the right balance between parts inventories and getting these to existing owners? Without knowing the supply part all we can do is guess and wait on Toyota. But Toyota's opacity in communication on this and other issues like the tonneau cover recall do not give me confidence in their judgement.
