Anyone have suggestions for a replacement front CV axle? Is stock still the best?

    https://youtube.com/shorts/TkWvxh7L_pA?feature=share

I have 130K on this stock truck and I’m thinking this noise is the front right CV axle. It gets louder when I take a turn and it’s there all the way through about 50mph. I can’t hear it with the windows up, but I stripped and sound deadened every surface on the interior so it’s hard to hear much of anything now. I mostly notice it with the windows down and driving next to a building.

When the truck is on stands, I can spin all the wheels with no click-click sound. Nothing if I put it in gear and let them spin. Same in 4WD. I can’t replicate it on stands. I pulled the wheel off and can’t find anything rubbing. Noise is still there with the wheel center caps off. I would say the wheel bearings feel and sound good - no play. Lug nuts have been torqued to spec many times now.

The sound only happens when it was under a load which I guess is why I believe it’s the CV axle. I probably won’t know for sure until I pull it all apart. No, I have had any excessive grease and can’t find any tears in the boot.

I know I need new shocks - they’re shot. I plan to do the Bilstein 6112/5160 this summer. I’ll probably put some aftermarket UCAs on as well. Other than that, I think the front end is in good condition.

I’ve searched the forum and from what I can tell, the best CV axles are the original Toyota. I’ve seen a lot of threads with people rebuilding them, but I think it’s probably shot if it’s making this much noise. I doubt that’s an option for me. Just hoping there’s a good quality CV axle replacement available. Any input would be appreciated.

If you do not want to shell out the coin for RCV, you can buy re-manufactured OEM CVs for around $110 plus a refundable $75 core charge if you turn in your original OEM CVs. Part number 43430-0C040-84 for 07-21 Tundras.

Since RCV doesn't make anything for my truck, this is the route I have gone for a few replacements. Pretty happy with the price and outcome.

The RCV is way more than I’m looking for. I’m sure it’s great though.

Thanks for the link on the reman CV. My local dealership sells them at 3x that cost. Looks like I’ll need to get them shipped. Thanks!

Go to https://autoparts.toyota.com/ and enter your zip code under "find a dealer", shop around for a cheaper price at other dealers nearby. Toyota doesn't pay return shipping on the core charge, so I usually have that ready to turn in when I pickup the reman CV at the dealer.
