    Good Evening

I have a 2003 RCLB since 2018 and I am experiencing on both doors where the windows will go down but will stop at different points on the way up. I let it "rest" for a minute or so and try it again and they will go up a little more. Eventually I can get them up after multiple attempts.

Do I look to replace the motors or is this a switch issue? I will apologize in advance that I'm sure there's many threads on this issue. I have been absent on this forum for a while but I need to give my truck some love this Spring/Summer.

    Thanks, Randy

Is there a change in sound from the motors that you can tell? If not, they are probably fine.
I would pull the panel, inspect AND grease the track for the windows. I would alap inspect the exterior window trim. If it’s in bad shape, water and debris could be getting down there and screwing up the tracks. You said you haven’t been on the forum, is that because the truck hasn’t been driven? Trucks sitting for long periods tend to develop problems.
Or is that cause she’s been running like a top and you have no need for us? Just kidding… sort of.

This happens to me on my rear back window. It stops half way and I have to give the button another push for it to go all the way up.

Great advice. Once I pull up on the switch they sound normal about a 1/4 of the way up. Then it sounds like the motor is struggling and stops. Almost like it's binding. I like you idea of greasing the tracks. I bought the truck at an estate sale in 2018 with 93k miles. I have added only 10k since then. It does sit in my garage for long periods of time as I use it to move materials. Back when I bought the vehicle I was on this forum all the time researching this issue and others. It seems like I remember that the window motors or the window switch were prone to wear out. Maybe I'm wrong.

And yes, the truck runs like a top and I took it to a Toyota dealer to replace the front belts, water pump, tires, etc.

Potentially stupid question: Do you have VentShades or a similar product on those windows, that tuck up into the window seal instead of adhering to the body?

    If not ...

I'm pretty sure all modern electric window motors have fail-safes on them where they'll stop rolling if meeting resistance. Imagine how many headless, armless people we'd have walking around (or not) if it weren't the case.

In light of that, thinking about the symptoms - motor stops in random places - suffice to say, something is probably binding. First thing I'd be doing to troubleshoot this is popping off the door card of the impacted window - starting with whatever window the driver is not using, in case you need to leave the door card off for a bit - then re-plug the controls with the card off so the window motor will work. I'd test, and watch for binding in the door.

Check all of the bolts for the window and tracks to ensure they're tight - a loose bolt would absolutely cause this.

While in there, clean off then re-lub the points on the scissor (I'm gonna keep calling it that b/c I'm brainfogged and the real word isn't coming to me) and any other gearing related to the window.

EDIT: I doubt this is a motor wearing out. Not two at the same time. Odds of that are slim.

My drivers window stopped working altogether, in the half open position of course. I pulled the door card, cleaned and lubed the regulator mechanism and it's worked like new since. The inside of the door panel is pretty exposed to the elements of water and dust and I'm amazed it made it the 20 years it did before needing attention.

Thank you. No on the window shade. This is making the most sense. I now have a project for this weekend!

When I bought it the PO used it for a plow truck in the hills above Denver so it was used sparingly. I spent my first few weeks cleaning out all the pine needles from the tree it sat underneath for years. Removed the plow (I didn't need it) and started to maintain it. First gen Tundras rule.

I've always used "shin etsu" grease. It's a Honda product, silicone based, for rubbers and the (@Shifty) window regulators and have always had great results. Single tube lasts 10 years :)

if you are talking about the rear sliding window in the back, its supposed to do that. It stops half way when coming up as a safety feature. I thought mine kept getting stuck too but then I did some research and found out it’s designed to do that

    Good Morning

I wanted to finalize this thread by thanking those above who helped me. The end result was bittersweet. On the passenger side I was able to use silicone lubricant and the window has no binds and operates as it should. The driver's side still doesn't function properly and I can hear that the motor is going out. It only makes sense that driver's window was used more frequently by the previous owner (the cab smells like an ashtray) so I will take a 50% success rate. A Dorman replacement motor has been ordered and I will watch some YouTube videos on the steps required to complete this task.

    Enjoy your day.

@FJ432 just a heads-up. Other members on this forum have had great success getting rid of ashtray smell from smoked-in trucks, permanently, using an ozone machine. This video covers what I suspect they've done. Don't skip the warning.

Thanks for the link Shifty. I am planning on doing this and thankfully I have a coworker who has one of these machines. I have tried everything else (deep clean, sprays, chemicals, deodorizers, etc). The PO was a chimney.

I passed a few years ago on a pretty solid GMT800 regular cab pickup from a local dude who smoked 2 packs a day. He passed away and his kid was selling it at a reasonable price. This is weeks before I bought my 1st gen, probably 5 years ago? I didn't want to deal with it. Back then, I didn't know blasting your truck w/ozone was a thing...

I found my window regulator to be bent on mine. Still moved up and down freely but didn't go up to the right position, acted like it wanted to go off track.

The denso regulator with motor is not too expensive on RockAuto, would hate for you to replace the motor only to find the regulator is not quite right as well which could cause the motor to be slowing down.

Nick, thanks for the info as I appreciate your perspective.

The one I bought includes the regulator so I plan on doing both. Mine is acting differently than yours but I believe that my existing regulator contributed to part of the problem.

    Have a great day.
