I would red flag it, doesn't look like they had any intention of maintaining it. So no telling what problems they've ignored, and looks like they declined repairs on transmission. For me it'd be a no.

A fleet vehicle with no tow package / no transmission cooler and indications the transmission is shot?

    could be about $8-10k bad…

as others pointed out, it’s indicative of a bigger issue - they didn’t take care of that vehicle. 4 service records with 100k miles = 25k mile oil change intervals. No thanks.

On the Toyota owners page it does show that they had oil changes done every 5k up until 30k at the Toyota dealer, of course that doesn’t mean they continued at that interval after the Toyotacare ran out, but who knows. Anyways I took the gamble but I’d love to continue hearing peoples thoughts as it will let me know what to be aware of and watch. It drove and seemed fine

The transmission issue was 2k miles ago so I may go right to the dealer and see if they can dig the old codes and find anything

I'd do an oil flush and immediate oil change just to see what comes out of it, then probably do a drain and fill on the tranny. Then replace drive train fluids as soon as you can. I don't know anything about the 4.6s, my 19 has no zerks on the drive shaft, all sealed.

Custom bug spat pattern hood, grill & bumper. Dead Live Oak leaf collection under hood, cowl and lower fenders. Beach sand custom floor covering.
Looks like some goodball washed under the hood and the salesdrone couldn't wait for the water to dry before taking photos. That little act will almost certainly cause problems later. Hard to tell by the low rez photos but it doesn't look like it was used on pothole repair duties.

The only thing "wrong" with the 4.6 is it was not offered in the Tacoma, otherwise that is what would be in my garage right now. Not whining about my Tundra with the 5.7 (LOVE that engine).

I would check the Car Fax to see what kind of service history shows up there - incase they decided to take it somewhere other than a Toyota Dealership? If the service intervals really are 25K each year - I wouldn't even consider it.

This is what’s there - one oil change along with brakes and tires 2 years ago.

on the Toyota owners webpage there are more service records, including 5k interval oil changes up to 30k. I could also be that these trucks have the oil changed by an in house mechanic? I mean don’t half of you guys change your own oil anyways? What is someone gonna say when you sell your trucks….. just a counterpoint

Either way, I’d dump and fill the differentials, t-case, and cooling system. There are drain valves on each side of the block you can get to through the wheel wells.

Drain and fill on the trans - maybe more than once if it comes out really dark or burnt.

Oil change, oil filter, spark plugs, belt, belt tensioner, idler pulley, air filter, cabin filter.

Anyone can enter service items to the Toyota database. I’ve logged the majority of the maintenance I’ve performed.

Hey AZBH I have a quick question sir

I called the place I bought this rig from and told them I’m skittish about this transmission situation and I was told that they put an additive called BG into the engine and tranny fluid. They told me I can have it serviced again at a BG dealer within 6k miles and receive some 30k interval protection through BG. I’m rolling my eyes, is this just them passing the buck to some megacorporations product warranty? Would you recommend me just scrapping this BS and going straight to the dealer for a drain and fill? (Or looking up YouTube vids and attempting myself?) I’ve wrenched and torn apart the entire dash to color match a 21 tundra I owned as well as removed the entire bumper grill etc to color match the shrouds, did my own rear swaybar (you can see in my post history) but I have no exp with fluids of any type

Also - what’s the consensus on seafoam nowadays? Should I run a can or two?

I would never touch a government fleet vehicle for anything besides a spare beater because governments generally only pay for oil changes and nothing else until it's time to decommission. Employees beat on them hard because it costs them nothing and they don't get in trouble if anything blows up, even before the warranty expires.

Governments don't want to be bothered paying for anything else besides oil and filter because they just need the engine run and the car to be roadworthy until it hits their mileage limit. Probably should get plugs, coolant, diff fluid and transfer case fluid to start as someone else said.

Check carefully for driveline leaks because it's a safe bet if there were any underneath those fluids were just topped off until decommissioning. There is no financial sense in paying for expensive driveline repairs or gasket/fitting replacement for a vehicle getting auctioned off by 100k if nothing is pouring out.

At the right price - anything is worth taking a chance on.

30k is not the right price here.

Personally - I’d be closer to 23-26k if really interested. The lack of records on CarFax doesn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t maintained - hell, plenty of corporate shops that report to CarFax couldn’t manage to fix it right if they had to - the work “could” have been done by the prior owner or by an independent shop.

This one just has that feel of a vehicle that “could” have issues. Doesn’t mean it will - and Tundras in general are forgiving of lack of maintenance- but everything has its limits. I’d roll the dice at 23-24 - but not at 30k - that 5 grand gives a solid buffer if something DOES break.

I don’t dump anything down the fill hole other than the fluid/oil I’m using. I don’t believe in detergents, conditioners, cleaners, etc. use a quality oil, change it on a regular basis, and these trucks will fall apart around the drivetrain.

The indication this trans has a problem to the point where someone is dumping snake oil conditioner in is a sign it was abused / neglected. Is there a bunch of wear around the tow hitch?

I would never touch a fleet vehicle period, whether it be government or private. Our work fleet trucks are heavily abused and there are so many idiot drivers. Problems are unnoticed and often the folks managing fleet don't even understand proper maintenance. It's a complete gamble.

There isn’t. The used dealer says they do this for every vehicle under 100k miles so I still have crossed fingers

What about the note saying internal transmission failure dated 2/2022? Someone other than the shop saying there was a problem in the trans put the trans additive in coincidently?

Working at a municipal adjacent place there's a high probability it was changed in house and I'd be shocked if it got recorded anywhere other than their own system. And by system I mean a notepad, maybe a spreadsheet.

In my experience - albeit commercial fleet not municipal - if a fleet is doing oil changes in-house they are damn sure doing the higher cost basic maintenance like brakes as well.
