I need to get a 1st gen tundra about 400 miles away to a ranch and am wondering if I could tow it with a tow dolly. I have a 2014 crewmax I’d tow it with and it seems like it would be lighter than a flatbed.

Would I just need to keep it in neutral and go or is this a bad idea?

To tow it with the rear wheels on the ground you would need to disconnect the drive shaft.

Towing with it in neutral will cook the transmission. Even in neutral stuff is spinning. And with it not running the fluid isn’t moving and it’ll be a bad time.

I concur. UHaul may not rent a tow dolly to you to haul that truck, though, so I would call ahead and inquire. They have limitations on weight and front axle width, and only supply tie down straps big enough for 27” tires, if I recall correctly. Perhaps things have changed, but I’ve always had to use a local equipment rental place that supplies tire tie downs big enough for 31’s or 32’s.

IMO, I’d rather use a flatbed and load it the truck correctly over the trailer axles, but that’s just me. I’ve used both plenty of times and feel the flatbed provides a better, more stable ride at speed, especially over long distances. Tow Dollie’s are usually rated for 55mph or less so depending on where you are driving, it could be a much longer drive. The fact that the vehicle being towed has a small amount of steering when loaded let’s the rear tires wander a small bit, which is part of why you are limited to 55mph with a tow dolly. My flat bed tires are rated for 82 mph so the trailer is good to go as fast as i feel comfortable driving.

    Just my two cents.

If you go the car trailer route with Uhaul ensure the wheelbase fits.... I ran into a guy a few years back that couldn't understand the wheelbase wouldn't work. They wouldn't allow for a dolly becuase it may be too big..
I lied for this dude and got him a dolly, since he was signing and he understood what he was fetting into I left him on his own.

None of the uhaul trailers will work according to their website. I’ll just need to get some buddies and drive them down
