    Good Morning,

My build date is fast approaching and I have a choice to make on this option. I have one from Toyota on my 2020. The new bed being composite has me second guessing ordering it again. I use a Bed Rug on the floor only and have been very happy with that product. I do occasionally load a pallet of material in the back. I have it placed and slide directly on the bed rug and have not had any issues. I'm more concerned about the finish side if something rubs against the composite bed with or without the spray on bedliner. Presently I have zero concerns. Will that be different if I don't get it?

Looking for real world history on a 2022 or 23. Mine will be built in late June.

    Thanks,
    Randy

Agreed. The whole “spray on bedliner over a composite bed” debate is about as decisive and triggering for some people as the 3.5l TT V6 vs 5.7 V8 debate.

    To the OP:
To 2 cents that I’ve shared a bunch before: Mine has held up well since I got the truck in Dec of 21. No gashes, peeling, etc in the 17 months I’ve had the truck. I beat the hell out it for the first few months because of a remodel we were doing. Demolition debris to the dump. Pallets loaded into the back by forklift. You name it. That was all before I put in a bed rug because I’m pivoting my truck to a camping setup for the season.

Others haven’t been so lucky with their factory bedliners. Search the forum for their stories and pictures. There were a fair amount of issues early on (though mine was an early build too - Nov 2021) but I don’t recall seeing many issues with the bedliner mentioned lately on the 23’s.

I like it and don’t regret having it on my build sheet. Others don’t care for it. You decide.

I've read that the spray in bedliner doesn't stick very well to the composite beds but I suspect that the prep work may have been lacking IMHO. i would think that the bed would need, at the least, a good cleaning with denatured alcohol before applying the spray liner.

Mine came with it, so I really can't say much about NOT having it. . But if it didn't come with it already, I'd probably just put in a rubber mat to keep stuff from sliding and let it be.

Mine is peeling and was sprayed on paper thin. I attribute it to a poor application at the port.

Mine was peeling the day that I drove it off the lot. Replaced by Linex under warranty.

I fully understand the prep and or peeling. That wasn't what I was looking for in my question and that's my fault for not forming the question correctly. My question is about the wearing of it compared to not having it and just using the composite as it is. Does the composite get chewed up and or gashed easily without the spray on? Does it nick easily like a tailgate topper plastic on my 2020? That's the angle I am asking from.

    Thanks,
    Randy

I'd go without and just use a bed mat.

Context is key. Thanks for the additional details so we can answer your question better. Still, without knowing how you intend to use your truck it’s tough to give you an answer.

I had my old 2005 Tacoma with a composite bed for years. No bed mat or bed liner. My bed had quite a few gouges and rough areas when I finally sold that truck after 250k+ miles. It even had a spot where it was thinning because of the wear of sliding cargo in and out. But I used that truck for work which involved moving equipment and supplies between job sites. I’d haul loaded pallets multiple times a week in that bed.

That being said…there isn’t really anything you can do to the composite bed to damage it through “normal” DIY-type of projects. Hauling sheets of plywood from Home Depot or weekend camping gear or the kid’s bikes will not damage it. The stuff is pretty tough and resilient.

If you’re doing “serious” hauling or using it daily as a work truck…then you might consider a bed mat or liner.

If it’s just acting as the family truckster…then it’s more you’re fine without any additional bed protection. Keep in mind you may still want at least a bed mat because the composite bed is very slippery.

I have a 2017 Tacoma with composite bed, and my 2023 Tundra came with the factory spray in lining. Both have Toyota OEM bed mats.

Tacoma has some scoring and whitish marks where the composite was scraped by stuff I have hauled over the years, and some deep scratches. No serious damage and it has held up well. It looks a bit battered but it's a truck!

Tundra is new so I have only hauled furniture to date. The spray in liner is very rough in texture and it tore up the particle board furniture I was hauling (hence the bed mat purchase). It looks great and appears to be very tough but it will scratch things up if you're not careful!

    Hope this helps.

Same experience. My spray in has held up with no issues over the last year. I've thrown in a two seat tree stand under the same conditions as you, 300lb tripod feeders, furniture, deer (blood washes right off), metal shelving, plenty of wood, stones, metal rakes, metal spikes and stakes, all kinds of stuff.

Thanks to everyone. I’ve added it to the build.
