38 Gal tank experiences....

Hey Billy, @Trdwillie14 Some questions for you to answer here. How's your fuel gauge? I don't think you changed the pump did you?

 

The gauge will still work as it does. It's just a float sending signal to the gauge. The tanks are all the same height in order to keep the pick-up in the proper place, so the float will work the same. The DTE will NOT be accurate though as the computer needs to know the tank capacity to do that calculation.

You can put a new pump in if you want. I've got like 90+K miles on mine. TFT has been on for about 30k. I max out at about 700 miles of highway range on a full 46 gallons.

 

Thanks Matt! This helps...I think I am leaning more towards the Transfer flow as opposed to a used 38 from the salvage yard. That is great that you get so much mileage before you have to refuel!

So he is correct your gauge is off the weird thing is if you disconnect your battery after doing the swap it will show correct when I fill
Up it shows 295 miles till empty but it’s really 395 ish it will never correct or “learn”

 

And no sorry I didn’t change the pump. Hope all is well

My 2018 came stock with the 38 gallon tank but what is especially annoying is the fuel gauge (and estimated range) still thinks it is a 26 gallon tank. I have run to zero on the range scale (needle on gauge is on "E") and still had about 9 gallons left in the tank.

Who would have ever thought a photo of a gas pump could be so nightmare inducing. Pictures of ghosts, demons and devilish monsters don't scare me at all but seeing those kind of numbers scares the crap out of me because I know all to well that they are real and can't be chased away with any exorcism or banishing ritual. At least not hear in California any ways.

 

Just pretend not to notice ...it's a pretend world afterall.

 

With everything that is making the news cycle since COVID it would sure seem that way.

 

Where did you find such cheap gas in CA?? Last time I was there (Bay Area), I paid like 6.99 per gallon for the cheap stuff.

 

Just joined so a little late to the party. You are correct sir. I have run my 19 5.7 down to zero half a dozen times and have never gotten it to take more than 31 gallons. Word of caution, the 7 gallon reserve is supposed to bath the fuel pump and keep it cool so it won't wear prematurely or burn up. Cheers!

I usually fill-up when the needle is on 1/2. It takes 16-17 gallons from that point and it be full.

 

I am new to the forum and I am new to my used 2019 CrewMax with 135,000 on the odo. I am interested in the 46 gallon replacement tank. However, since this thread has started the price for the tank has come close to doubling, OUCH

 

Ahh yea but the traffic. How do you deal with the traffic? I don't care how good the price of gas is in the OC you couldn't pay me enough to live down there and have to deal with that kind of traffic everyday. I lived down south for many years but I don't have the tolerance that anymore. I just don't.

 

I have never ran my tank down until the light comes on until today. By the time I filled up it said I had 17 miles to go. I filled up and the tank only took 28.86 gallons. Wtf?!

Had towed a travel trailer on 10000 mile trip from Alabama to British Columbia with my 2018 double cab, I had run many times to the gas station with no remaining miles to go on the gas odometer to fill it up to 32 gallons. (80$ in Alabama, 220$ in California thanks to GasBuddy I never filled it up in CA at that price, just crossing the Arizona state line, it was half the price of CA)

All the California comments about gas prices make me laugh... Elections have consequences… Like the old saying goes “insanity is repeating the same actions and expecting a different result”

 

Yea but have you ever heard the saying, It doesn't matter who won the election it only matters who counts the votes. Lets just say those counting the votes are less then honest. Plus it's unfortunate that we have two large population centers (LA and San Francisco and to some degree Sacramento) that speak for the whole entire state but don't necessarily represent them. The fact is that the vast majority of California is rural farm land and pristine wilderness. Cowboys and pickup trucks. Hard working individuals that believe in things like family and the rule of law and can damn well define what a woman is. None of us want anything to do with Gavin Newsome, Pelosi or any of their ilk or any of the "WOKE" bull shit that they push. Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it. We have jobs and careers and families to support. We have mortgages and car payments and are taxed into oblivion so we can't afford to become activists. If we where on the other hand a bunch of fat and lazy blue haired wokesters divorced from reality with no ambition and nothing to do because we are all unemployed and living on welfare and section 8 and have all the time in the world to become activists then maybe we could change things.

Anyways I digress all poly-ticks aside. I live in California because I was born and raised here and consider it my home. I honestly don't think I would want to live anywhere else and yea the gas prices suck and I will probably never be able to afford to own my own house here but I can sure as hell wear shorts and a tank top in January and the bottom side of my Tundra will always remain fresh and minty like it came from the factory, free of rust.

 

Over the years I've gotten into the habit of not letting it get below half a tank before I fill up unless I'm on a trip. I just think that if you can afford it you should keep your vehicles gassed up and ready to hit the road with out notice just in case you need to bug out in an emergency and gas stations may not be open for what ever reason.

 

I completely understand. Home is home and there is much to love about the Left Coast. It is too bad that the most beautiful state with some of the best people has allowed the politicians who dine at the French Laundry while locking down the rest of the state, has permitted homeless encampments on every street and in front of many businesses in the once beautiful city of San Francisco and has allowed marauding gangs to drive many businesses out of the neighborhoods because the DAs permit their crimes to go unpunished. I feel for you brother but understand it is the price many of you are paying…because to you California is, and always will be…home.

 

I have a 38 gallon in my 2016 1794 Edition and when the low fuel warning comes on I can drive almost 100 more miles. I regularly drive it using the current miles driven and MPG readings to see how many gallons I have remaining and it is spot -on (ex. 367 miles on trip meter divided by the 12.9 MPG = 28.45 gallons used or 9.55 gallons remaining). When on long trips I can go a little over 500 miles between fill-ups. I have never had any rough running or stalling and my driveway is quite pitched. I have always ran my new vehicles completely out of gas one time when I first get them to see where the needle is on the gauge when it is completely out (this from my 1960s muscle car days when the gas gauges were more -ish or suggestions rather than an accurate gauge). any who, with 91,000 miles on the Tundra, I have had no fuel system issues. My dad has a 2015 1794 edition with the tini-tiny tank and his gauge is a lot more accurate between the low fuel warning and the miles left to empty.

 

Just verifying this assumption - when you replace your fuel pump, you/the garage is going to drop your tank? So that would be an opportune time to go ahead and switch it to a 38 gal?

 

Seeing that $150 price tag to fill the big tank is rough but then I realize my 4runner eats the same amount of gas and costs the same to fill up overall, just the tank is much smaller so I'm going to the gas station more often lol
