i am now seeing first gens outprice second gens up here. Crazy!

 

Looking at the issues people are having in the 3rd gen section, I'm not surprised.

 

You guys and your fancy trucks. Mines worth maybe $7500, only cause I just put 6 grand into it. But, my dad bought it new and I basically got it for free.

 

Think of it this way.....put $10K into a FTG and you have an awesome like new truck that will last you the rest of your life.

Put $10K in a turdgen and you have a (small) down payment on a rolling computer.

 

I think I could probably get $20k for mine pretty easy. 75k miles, fully loaded and nicely optioned, extremely well taken care of. I'd probably need to drop $500 at the upholstery shop to fix the driver seat bolsters, but generally speaking, the truck is in damn mint shape.

Unlike some others, if someone came at me with a $30k offer, I'd be hard-pressed not to sell. $30k will buy a lot of beer. It'd also score a pretty nice 2nd gen J100 which I wouldn't fight against, and probably a pre-'99 Taco 2RZ to boot, so I'd still have a bed to haul things in.

But naw. I'm not selling.

 

I find it interesting how much value people put on their emotional attachment to their vehicles.

My other car, even though it's rarer, I've spent more money on it, significantly more time, and It's a much bigger accomplishment for me, wouldn't be a huge deal if it was totaled. I'd be sad, sure, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. (I'd probably just be lucky that I was alive, knowing that thing) I'd definitely sell it if someone offered me the right price, which would be comparable to similar cars. I'd value my emotional attachment at less than $500.

The Tundra? Being totaled? F--k that. Between the history in my family, being my first car, how far it's "restoration" has come, and how much it means to my family and I, I'd be absolutely heartbroken. The truck means more to me than anything else I own, and it just makes me happy to drive it every day. I'd probably say my emotional attachment is worth $25k+, and the only way I'd sell it is if I knew for certain that the next owner would continue to care for it at a similar standard. Crazy, I know.

 

Our truck was purchased new in 2002 for $29K. We have a family rental business and before buying the tundra we had a 1996 Ford Ranger for light utility work (I mean light!). We eventually needed a bigger truck that could tow trailers. Back in 2002 the Tundra was a relatively new model. We looked at other trucks but what sold us on the Tundra (as funny as this may sound) the Toyota could fit in our small one-car garage opposed to other trucks that were just too big. The truck has been worth every penny we paid for it. Over the years we have hauled countless loads of rock, dirt, branches and towed dump trailers and utility trailers to transport riding mowers.

Currently, the truck has only 110K miles. The front seats have never been touched thanks to the heavy duty plastic seat covers that were installed right after it was purchased. In the last year we have done a bunch of work to it...replaced the timing belt, water pump, several pullies, steering rack, new coils and spark plugs, new battery, new rear bumper with new plastic coverings. We have also upgraded to Tacoma 2021 TRD wheels/tires, LED lighting, backup camera, 7 pin for trailer brakes, brake controller, and warning lights. New shocks will be going on soon (it still has the originals). The frame had a bunch of surface rust. We scrapped all the surface rust off before repainting the frame. The truck has been garaged since new and we stopped driving it in the winters years ago.

Last year, we were going to trade the truck in for a new Tacoma and even put a deposit down. However, the dealer was going to give us only $6K for the Tundra. Also, after thinking about it, we would rather keep the V8 opposed to a V6 truck for better towing so we backed-off on a new Tacoma and kept the Tundra. Very glad we did.

Seeing what the market is for these trucks, I wouldn't be afraid to ask $15k for this truck, considering that we are one-owners, the low mileage, having the maintenance records and that these trucks are known for going 300K miles easily.

 

It would have to be an insane number, like down payment on a really, really nice house kind of number. My grandad bought it new in 2001. I inherited it in 2021.

Considering it only has 47k miles and I just had timing belt, tensioners, water pump, idlers etc done. The interior looks like a time capsule, hardly ever sat in and has spent it's entire life in a garage. I am not sure I could sign on the dotted line if I was offered that insane number.

 

Another number potentially worth tossing out might be the most you’d pay for a comparable truck if yours were to be totaled for some reason. For me, I’d unfortunately be unable to buy a replacement without significant negotiation so I’m probably a zero on that for now.

The fun part of numbers is tracking them over time. Assuming most of us will be keeping them through 2035 and the rise of EV’s.

And since people are already doing this, post your window sticker if you have it, though consider blacking out the VIN.

06AC SR5 with flares, LSD and bench. No BS. Has some rust but all things I can/will repair/replace some day. Bought in 08/16 w/ 109k for $12k. Just rolled over 180k this month. It’s not built. The body and paint is still in great shape for its age. In WA I’m pretty sure I could still get 12k for it. I’d sell if someone came with $20k+ but im not interested in selling it. I want to put 300k miles on er’

 

Mine is not mint. It’s been used heavily as a truck. It’s a loaded first year 2000 AC 4x4 Limited with leather and wood grain. It’s in average condition cosmetically and good mechanically (once the wheel bearings are swapped). Sits around 268k miles. Drivers seat is worn, but still intact. Rest of the interior is pretty nice. Bed is well used, couple of dents in the drivers side body panels due to a rogue deer attack. It’s honestly worth about $8k to the right buyer, probably closer to $6k around here to the uneducated about Toyota buyer. It’s not priceless, but dang near for me. It’s got a lot of memories, but it’s just too darn good of a truck. I really value things that are useful, and this truck has never let me down. I wouldn’t take $15k for it. It would be tempting since we just finished remodeling a house that cost a pretty penny. $20k would probably do it sadly as that would almost pay off the 2019. Then I could transfer my irrational feelings to it.

 

Worth more than anyone would give me. I'm 65 and this will be my forever truck. And even if I got really good $$ for it, what the hell else would I buy? I've done all the big maintenance on this one, it's going to live a nice long life exploring the beauty of the North Coast.

 

Exactly!!! In fact, as soon as I had the cash in hand, I'd run here and offer $40k to one of you with a VVT-i DC built to my liking and let you talk me up to $50k or $60k...

 

A kid offered me $20k while I was fueling up the other week. My response was, “more than you can afford pal, Ridgeline.” He looked puzzled, turned around and walked off. I need a fat down payment on a property but never giving this truck up! It’ll be beaten, abused and crashed but will always be rebuilt and stay in my family.

 

I'm with the majority here for the most part. I plan to use my truck in retirement which I'm trying to work out to be 4-5 years from now. That said if selling it could get me to that finish line sooner I would and figure out the rest later.

I need to catch up on some maintenance on mine - swap all fluids, grab a new set of tires and install a proper lift at some point. I have a little clearcoat issue on the front from Beetlejuice that I would like to respray as well. My guess is I could get ~$18k for mine, has a little less than 78k miles. It is a Limited but comes with cloth seats (in perfect condition) which I prefer, not sure what others would want. And it comes with the Rear Seat Audio setup and the "OEM" sub that I think is pretty cool.

First Gen Tundras are the perfect size and have great styling and mechanicals not matched by any truck since. My 2000 AC isn’t fancy and doesn’t have any problematic mechanicals like the unicorn MC or ABS. Heck, it’s a fun driving truck and I’ll drive it til it quits which given its maintenance history could well be more than 20 years hence…
