No-drill bed bags, bed bins (1st gen)

I'm getting a little tired of not having some tucked-away storage in the bed for my restraint devices, straps, etc.

I was poking around for no-drill solutons and found a few. I just need something that's generally not going to be nest-friendly for rodents and cockroaches, keep my stuff (under a tonneau) dry and mildew-free. Anyone got suggestions? I see there's some options out there, just poking around, but I'd like something known to fit out trucks.

 

I have the UnderCover case you linked but you have to drill holes for it.

 

I've seen a couple of trucks on here recently with the Undercover, I feel like @txagg may've been one of them but I don't recall. One of our TX brethren had one that caught my eye and got me on this tangent of storage compartments in that weird spot in front/behind of the wheel well. I like it. But I don't like the drilling aspect, mostly because I'm not sure if it'll work w/tonneaus or not.

I like the cloth one a little more but haven't looked into whether it's a must-drill situation or not. I don't need anything that permanent. I just need a semi-sealed pouch. Cockroaches are a little pervasive where I am and they love to lay eggs in every-damn-thing, but I can make something near-airtight more-airtight if needed, so that's not my biggest concern atm.

 

I was about to pull the trigger on the undercover cases but I read that in many cases, they take away from the 48” width of the bed. Not a big deal for most, but it is for me. You can take the swing cases off, but if the cab and bed are loaded, that doesn’t help unless I plan for it in advance.

I have been trying to look for a solution. Right now I’m messing around with something, so if you’re interested, I’ll post it when I get around to making it work.

 

Sounds good, and yeah that 's my thing too. I don't need a ton of space, just enough that it won't infringe on my sliding gap between the wheel wells. Being able to quickly remove it and toss it in the back seat is also a plus, for those times when I need to, say, grab a few cubic feet of bulk mulch.

 

Ive been looking, too. Mainly for ideas to build something.

could hang something like this, and remove it at night. But i dont have a tonneau in the way.

but if i could hang my bedsides to a flatbed…

 

I posted one on here that I put in the Raptor. I read somewhere on here that the 2nd gen undercover works well on our best gens, I plan on taking the plunge sometime or another and will report back. They do not get in the way of covers, have a bakflip on the raptor. They slide into a hinge, and are very easily removable if you need the bed space.I hate crap making noise in the cab, and my hitch and collapsable tire iron are rusty. Right now I have a chain, hitch, hitch pins and rings, ropes, and ratchet straps in it.

 

I had an undercover swing case and loved it till after a few years it sheared the self tapping screws out of the bed. Then it was pretty useless.

 

I think @Casper421 made his work with a tonneau but his Ridgeline has a deeper bed than our AC's.

Ouch. Sorry to hear this. Probably a good reminder to not keep mine overloaded.

 

I’ve had 2 swingcases for years now. Love these things. Like Erik said, my Ridgeline has plenty of room between the cases and the tonneau.

Think I would place it up against the back wall using the oem bed rails to secure it.

 

Damn, I’ve had both cases loaded with 50+ pounds for 3 years and bash the truck offroad and my screws are still holding strong. Set some riv nuts in those holes and it’ll be stronger than before!

 

Well it was on a '17 which weren't made as well as the FG's so the bed thickness might have had something to do with it.

 

Yeah, I’ve heard the bed thickness on the 2/2.5 gens are thinner.

 

The more I think about this, I feel like an expanding (reverse?) clamp that could fit up inside the bedrail overhang would work perfect to hang a bag discretely, out of the way.

Like, picture a 2x2 board that's split in half and could be expanded to apply pressure to the bed side and rail overhang. Then just have eyelets or a caddy to hold a bag. That would be perfect for my needs. Maybe even a wedge-style clamp like the pic below.

Bag doesn't even need to hold much, so a slim/narrow one would work. 6" wide, 14-18" long and deep. That'd fit my tow strap, ratchet straps, and a small tool kit with the bare essentials so it's not taking up precious storage space in the cab.

Just found this. Unfortunately it’s out of stock (for full size trucks). Doesn’t swing out, but looks like it could mount with some relatively easy DIY bolts to our bed rails. (I’m a 2.5’er not trying to post out of pocket, but wanting an under cover case that I don’t have to drill into the bed for).

Just to update to my above post, it seems these VDP "non-swing" cases are out of stock everywhere. No idea if they will be in stock or just out of production. The VDP website doesn't even list a contact number or address or email, so I don't have much hope for reaching them. I think I'm going to just get one of the knock-off swing case (non-undercover brand) from Amazon-istan, eBay, and DIY my own bed rail fit with some brackets underneath to provide support where it doesn't touch the wheel well. And some quick release wing nuts or something to remove the entire box if I need the bed space. I just don't want to drill into the truck anymore than I need to. I don't need the case to swing, as I'll be up in the bed (or up on the tailgate if it were to swing) digging through it anyway. Does anyone have a recommendation for an unbranded Swingcase? particularly first hand experience would be great.

 

Keep in mind, if its for tow straps, etc, make sure its not air tight. Otherwise if you ever use them in the rain/snow, you have to carefully dry them all out before putting them away again. I drilled vent holes in the sides of the plastic ammo box I stored mine in after an unfortunate rust apocalypse incident. You don't even need a lot of holes, just enough that the stuff will eventually dry out rather than remaining wet for months.

As long as the container itself can breath, a tonneau is fine, they aren't air tight. You don't need good ventilation, just some.

Most straps, shackles etc are fine being a bit wet for a while, but a sealed container will keep any moisture in until the next time you use it. Which if your thinking mostly recovery gear, etc could be a months, by which time you have a moldy, rusty mess.

 

Just wanted to revive this old thread. Still looking for a wheel well box. Dont want to spend the $$ on the brand name swing case since 1. I won't be swinging it, and 2. I dont want to drill into the bed, or wreck a perfectly good swing case should I decide I go a different route (resale).

But, the reviews I read on the chineseum brands on Amazon have me worried. My plan is to just mount this to the bed rail, with some quick(ish) release detachments, then stabilize things underneath so it rests on my bed/wheel well. Anyone had any durability issues with the amazon crap? Any success stories?

 

Is this for your 2019? If so, this is the 1st gen subforum, that may be good info to share, since I'm not sure anything we'd be hunting would work for your rig.

 

yes. for my 2019. I just remember this thread having good leads on things. I've also got to imagine those plastic wheel well storage tubs have to be pretty universal in size and fit (at least for my purposes). Obviously the mounting of them properly (to utilize the swinging feature - which I won't be), would be vehicle/generation specific. My plan is to mount it somewhat in the way guys mount shovels/axe/hi-lift jack to DIY attachments on the bed rails.

Reason I was asking was just to see if someone had a "Brand X" that has held up, or if they bought a "brand whY" that share similar stories to the reviews saying "the lock broke in a week" etc.

Actually, hell, if I could just get this piece of it made up, that would be exactly what I need. I could just bolt it to my ammo can that I keep all my straps in and be done. It's basically what I was looking to do in the first place using shell/topper clamps. Hell, to that point, I guess I could also just toss some shell clamps on my ammo can
