Talk/text issues while using Apple Carplay

Appreciate any input on why I can't use the talk button to make phone calls or send texts when apple carplay is connected. It will only do destinations and I have to use the phone to make a call or send a text. Took to the dealer and they have no clue. Also, it's the only vehicle I've owned that the radio doesn't silence when speaking a text.
