Super Springs vs. Firestone/Air Lift Bags

Anyone have experience with Super Springs vs. Airbags?

I haven't heard of Super Springs. It seems a lot of people with airbags that are unhappy are when the are not towing or with no weight is in the bed but are happy when there is weight back there, because of this I opted for Roadmaster Active Suspension (RAS). Most people seem to be happy with the ride when both loaded or unloaded. I haven't installed mine yet as I bought them over the winter but soon I will be installing. I do have SumoSprings on my truck now. A bit bouncy when unloaded but rides real nice with minimal squat when I'm towing my boat. I decided to add RAS because I will be adding a bed rack and tent this year and I want to try and eliminate the slight squat when towing.

 

There are SuperSprings and SumoSprings. I have tried both and like the Sumos better. With the SuperSprings, it will raise the rear nearly 2 inches, but they do what they are meant to do. Another benefit to the Supers is they act similar to a sway bar, but you are going to lose some articulation as well. I'll be listing the Supers on the classifieds one day, just haven't got around it.

 

I would add RAS to your list of things to consider.

I've heard that the Super Springs will leave me with a 1.5" to 2" lift in the rear when not towing. But in two videos on the RAS, it appears that I may end up with this rear lift as well. I guess my only other option would be to install a leveling kit. Good, I will use this real world opinion and evidence to prove to my other half that I need yet another mod on the truck! Lol

 

@thumper_racer states 2" with the SuperSprings. With the RAS I have heard you will get less lift in the rear but it will depend on how much you gap the spring. With the HD kit that everyone seems to go with at the thinner disc you end up with 1/2" of lift and the thicker disc you end up with 1" of lift.

 

For starters, dump the stock made in Mexico junk leaf packs for something far better. Dobinson's, Alcan, Deaver's, etc. Costly, but worth it. Everything else is a band aid.

 

RAS is running a $98 discount through 3/31/23.

 

While I agree some aftermarket leaf packs are probably better than stock, I would disagree that everything else is a bandaid.
Airbags are bandaids, bumps stops that are too long for your application just to prevent squat are a bandaid (sumosprings, etc). The RAS (and maybe the Supersprings, I haven't researched but they seem similar enough to the RAS) do more than just prevent squat and support the factory leafs, they keep the leaf pack from flattening out under articulation, prevent axle wrap, and add additional sway/body roll control. A set of Deavers only will still flatten, still be susceptible to axle wrap and you'd still need an RSB or something else to help with body roll, especially when towing. A set of Coachbuilder shackles will do wonders for the rear suspension as well.
My current setup is CB +1s with a RAS set and it tows great, and its probably more than I'll ever need for towing.

 

Your longer shackles are bad for your springs without having extended bump stops. The springs are being "pushed" beyond the design limit. They will be flattened and may even break should your RAS ever be removed or fail while you are towing. I have aftermarket leaf packs, sumo springs (yellow), RAS HD kit, and BDS traction bars on my truck. Why? Because each serves a purpose and I like redundancy. Also have very minimal axle wrap in any situation which is a beautiful thing for keeping the driveshaft really happy. Very nice to drive loaded or towing and have very minimal squat with great weight distribution hitch ground clearance. My hitch isn't getting caught up and dragging or high centering unless I were to drive it into an extremely crazy position. But hey, it's just a forum here and I simply posted my opinion, never said that you or anyone else must agree with it! Safe travels!

Edit: Forgot to mention swapping leaf packs is the best way to not add more weight to the truck or reduce the payload capacity. Obviously different leaf packs and different RAS kits will have different weights so results will be all over the place and if getting the best results is important, then compare product weights.

 

I also purchasd the Roadmaster Active Suspension (RAS) for my 2013 Tundra and they are amazing. The truck felt like it was on rails and no major change to ride comfort. Even my wife noticed a difference in the handling!!! The RAS also helped with handling and performance while towing our 8,000 lb travel trailer. I've been using the RAS for nearly 3 years and have zero complaints......I highly recommend the RAS system!

 

This thread has convinced me to go with the RAS HD unit for my truck. It will be here in a couple of days. My trailer isn't that heavy at less than 7k loaded, but I am a bit worried about any squat and handling issues. Fingers are crossed and hoping all is good with the RAS.

Another question for anyone running the RAS and a weight distribution hitch.

When setting up the WDH, did you level to the height prior to RAS or the height (with the slight lift) after RAS?

Well, it is done. I will be towing this come weekend. That will be the true test to the worthiness of this item. So far, I am impressed....the empty travel ride has been noticeable.

 

I did not re-adjust the WDH after installing the RAS and, luckily, everything worked great. Between the RAS and your anti-sway bar, you should be good!
