I am wanting to install a new Pioneer / Kenwood. Do the navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze use the GPS for these or cellular? Sometimes on longer trips I am in areas with little to no cell coverage.

OME Nitrocharger/2612 (front), Bilstein 5100s (rear). Vanguard roll bar modified (by me) to fit over Patriot Stealth retractable tonneau. Aftermarket halo headlights with HID, various LED bulb replacements. 17" Fuel Blitz wheels with some 33" Nitto terra grapplers. Hoodscoop, nfab nerfbars, Bushwacker flares. No-name aftermarket grille, led fender extensions. Black Horse bambi-basher. Various offroad lights.
It is specific to the headunit. The headunit will come with its own gps antennae if it is a "navigation" headunit. Search for those. Be aware that most navigation apps require online data. Some, like google maps have an "offline" mode, but require you to download the maps before hand, and generally have a caveat to downloading the maps. Like google maps offline maps expire after a short period of time (30 days? cant remember). Others require you to pay for the maps. So you'll need to match the headunit AND your navigation app to your needs. There are also headunits that have both their own gps antennae and/or socket for existing gps antennae and the ability to insert a sim card for its own cell data service. Almost any headunit with an actual screen can pair with your phone and use it's gps for input, but without cell service, the map has to be in the HU/phones memory.
