I just purchased 5 oil filters to have on hand. Afterwards I started wondering how I should store them to keep them from drying out and possibly falling apart. I am due for an oil change soon but with my truck usage it might be 3-4 years before I use the others. It is pretty dry here in AZ so I though about putting them in a plastic bag and storing them inside (not in garage).

if that concerned about it, store in a utility closet or something inside the house.
or move the dirty magazine stack outside and put the filters in their place.

    Too many, but not enough....
its a paper filter, it should be fine sitting in your garage. If you think about an air filter which is similar, it sits in your engine bay during hot and cold and humid and dry conditions and its fine.

Throw them in a plastic bag, the amsoil filters I run arrive sealed like that iirc

Think the rubber gasket is his biggest concern, not the filter medium. My biggest worry in buying too much maintenance stuff ahead of time is the truck getting totaled before I get a chance to use them. Filters are cheap enough though, no big loss.

Out of curiosity, 3-4 years to go through all 5? Or 3-4 until your next oil change?

3-4 yrs to go through all 5. I change oil at 7500 miles and only put @ 10k a year on my truck.

I believe that filters prefer cellar temperatures. I have a few vintage '19 filters I'm saving for a special occasion.

Here in AZ carboard and paper will turn to dust due to the heat and low humidity.

You may be putting too much thought into protecting ~$30 worth of paper over 4 to 5 years.

Change the oil every 6 months instead. Then the filters and more importantly the truck will both be taken care of adequately.

That is wasting oil and I do not like pouring used oil into the storm drain that often.

I think you have the right idea. I would put them in a closet or laundry room inside. I was born and raised in AZ, as you know the heat can really dry things out!

Toolbox fits an even dozen in the drawer

Many auto parts stores will accept used oil for recycling at no charge. When I get done I toss the old oil in the back and run down to Autozone or Advance and it's gone and not in my ground water
